Wiring for towbar - electrics need resetting? |
|
I have a 54 plate vehicle (standard 7 seat, TDV6, cold climte pack, powerfold), without rear parking sensors. Trinity LR Hinckley tell me that even if I wired it myself, they need to reset the electrics, which takes 1 1/2 hours @ £75 an hour.(plus VAT no doubt) £187 if they fit the wiring.
Is this correct or are they just doing unnecessary work?

It will work as is, if they tell the car it's there it stops the car from lifting to off-road height with a trailer attached. £110 seems very steep for that - never bothered getting mine done (but only use it for a bike rack). Disco 5 HSE Lux

However Colliers Birmingham contradict that, saying provided LR branded electrics, the kit is recognised and setting is automatic. I was about to buy a towbar and electrics kit from ebay, but its branded Brinks. The seller says Brinks are the OEM suppliet to LR and it lookds identical to the LR3/RRS detachable bar but should I be worried?

Don't know about non-LR kit, but LR electrics will work automatically once wired up. Disco 5 HSE Lux

Recently bought and fitted a set supplied by "The Big One" and it works perfectly. Nick suggested that I would have to get it "activated" by LR but said to wait until it was in for a service or the like to keep the cost down(£10 to£30?). The activation is carried out on the computer and takes no time at all. Until then he made me aware of the possibility of the rear sensors being activated and that I was not to go changing the height. I've towed a small trailer a couple of times and not had any alarms yet, just waiting until it goes in for a service.
But I would check with Nick to be sure.

Yoevil LR parts (not Nick) say has to be plugged in to diagnostics - so 2-1 so far - does that mean half dealer in UK would do one thing and yhe other half something different.
Rugby man - do you mean you haven't heard about Brinks branded kit for LR3 or hadn't heard the one about needing to plug into diagnostics?

If I remember correctly Brinks was written on the last LR one I fitted.
They do plug straight in & work, although there is a setting on IDS to add that a towbar is fitted, it makes very little difference, as said something to do with suspension height I think.

It turns off your rear PDC when the electrics are plugged in from a trailer, light board etc.

The electricity should run through the wires... but will not disable the PDC when they detect the plugs are being used.
This is how I understand it.

My stealer says the same: you need an cable that staight plugs in and you need to download some software otherwise some features don't work. But he said the computer part is minutes not long.
He told also a story that a kwikfit nearby installed a cable but just taking the power from the lights and blew up an ECU while doing it. Roel

Right this is how it is, unless I am very mistaken.
Electrics will work once connected without any computer intervention. However:
If you are in low ratio and select certain TR settings, then the suspension height automatically changes. Having the computer update for towing - stops automatic height change when a trailer is connected. You can however manually select a height change.
Not sure about PDC - I think they automatically switch off without computer software, when towbar electrics are in use.
Easiest thing, have a word with Andy Reid at Trinity ask him to do it as part of the next service for nowt . . . "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Like I said -
It will work if you just wire it up
It will stop it going to offroad height if you get it activated (automatically, available in manual as Simon said)
It will stop the rear PDC being switched on if you get it activated - but you haven't got rear PDC anyway.
Wire it up, try it - if you don't like the way it works, get it activated.
I reckon TFC will be cheaper than most dealers though Disco 5 HSE Lux
