wobbles & vibrations on a 2016 Landmark with 71K

Hi,

I'm trying to get to the bottom of a number of issues with my Landmark. They all seem to revolve around wobbles & vibrations.

I just wondered if any of you have experienced similar symptoms & might be able to give pointer to the causes & solution?

Below is an extract of an email I sent to the dealer today in an attempt to describe the issues.

"To date, the rear prop has been changed because the centre bearing had failed which made an improvement. I’ve changed both front tyres back to Pirelli Scorpions so all four now match. I’ve had all four on a Hunter road force balance machine, although rim & tyre adjustment wasn’t required as they were in tolerance, just a straight forward balance. The car has also had Hunter 4 wheel alignment to bring it into spec. Most recently, the gearbox has been power flushed using a Launch UK power flush system.

There seems to be two things going on. One is a low speed wobble through the steering that occurs between 58 & 68mph. It feels more as though it’s sloppy suspension / steering than a wheel balance issue as its is a wobble rather than a vibration. There doesn’t appear to be any worsening or improvement to the wobble under braking, so I don’t think it’s disc or calliper related. Whilst there are no noticeable metallic clunks from the suspension in general driving, it is a bit sloppy sounding over speed bumps.

The second vibration which was the issue that caused me to discover the prop bearing failure is at cruising speed. Above 75mph the engine begins to sound “unbalanced”& it introduces a vibration into the cabin, this is similar to when a window is opened & the air buffets in the cabin, albeit in a more subtle way. It doesn’t make for a uncomfortable driving experience, particularly on extended journeys. If the throttle is released the noise / vibration stops immediately, so I don’t think it’s the drivetrain. I have also noticed that if the vehicle is left to tick over, a similar noise can be heard from the rear of the car but at a lower beat. It’s a sort of thump, thump noise. Looking under the vehicle from the rear I can see that the left exhaust bank is visually vibrating around / imbalanced (it’s not hitting anything or loose, just vibrating) whilst the right bank is nice & still. It feels as though if you were to speed this noise up in revolutions you would have the noise I’m hearing in the cabin at cruising speed.

Any thoughts people?

That's a lot to take in ... but liking the thought that 68mph is a low speed for your vibrations. Laughing

68 is, IMHO, very much in the range of wheel wobble vibration issues. Need the wheels balanced to eliminate that? I was going to say "on the car" but I'm guessing permanent 4wd prevents that being done?

My thought was also wheel balancing. You are sure when the Pirelli's were put back on the car they were properly balanced?.

Maybe worth getting all four balanced off the car to eliminate that..

Good luck..

PS And the word 'Dealer' always makes me shudder tbh. If I were you I'd go to one of the many trusted independents recommended on here and get yourself their opinion.. In five years of an MY16 D4 Lux not once did the supplying and servicing dealer get much right. I am now in the Indie sector and far better off for it...

Cheers guys.

I have an Indy from the days of Moneypit. I'm using the dealer at the moment as they are picking alot of these issues up under used approved warranty.

So the Pirellis were fitted by national tyres they balanced them. Wobble present. I then took it to a tyre company that have Hunter Road force balancer who I've used many times before to solve Balance issues. All four balanced. Wobble still there. I did look to find someone with On car balancer for my BMW but failed to find anyone.

Not sure I can add much more except I totally get the whole 'Approved Warranty' thing but a second opinion (other than the forum sleuths, of which I am an amateur..) from your Indy would be where I'd go next...

You don't have to have it fixed at the Indy do you? I am sure if they remember you from previous they know once out of Warranty you'll be back.

Good luck..

Thumbs Up
