Bures Pit - this weekend

I'm planning to go and give Bures Pit (near Colchester) pay and play a go this Sunday. I've never been before.

Any one else fancy it?

I am a) novice and b) dont fancy getting knee deep in mud - so hoping there is some fairly tame stuff for me to do. Looking at some youtube vids, looks to be some - what you say?

Ive been. Will I return? - probably not. As someone posted on another thread, the 'mud pluggers' churn most of the 'easy' tracks up, so a lot of areas were just not accessible to me in a standard D4 with just General Grabbers on, or at least I didn't feel I could.

Wasn't helped by my novice schoolboy error, had been there literally 3 mins, pulled to the side of a well trodden track to allow another car through and got stuck, needing a tow out. Confidence dented, i did find an area that was much drier and had a bit of up and down a few tracks, but I was a reluctant to explore too much for fear of further embarrassment.

There was fairly heavy rain last weekend, which probably didn't help.

This is my first experience of a pay and play site, maybe they are all similar, but I suppose I had some (perhaps naive) expectations, which were mostly completely wrong. We estimated maybe as many as 75 vehicles, maybe more. Of these, I only saw no more than 10 cars that looked to be standard, with just off road tires. I think there were only 2 other D3/4s - both standard cars. Each to their own I suppose, was good to watch some of the efforts to get up some gravity defying hills. May be try elsewhere next time, just they are all alot further away from me, should be shod with GG AT3 by then, which may help.

I did one pay and play, and never again. As you've mentioned, it was full of none standard cars seeing how much mud they could churn up. I saw 2 roll overs, and we left shortly after that. I now do green lanes with a friend in his 90. I find the adventure of lanes far more appealing than hooning around in mud. We also go to the Plain occasionally.

I'd have a think about doing an off-road courses at one of the shows - I've taken my D3 round without any problem, there's plenty of marshals to point you in the right direction (there's more challenging sections for drivers/vehicles that want them & more realistic, but still fun ones, for our daily drivers).

My current avatar is from LRO's Peterborough off-road course at Yarwell a few years ago (I think)
