Worth Claiming On Insurance?

Probably more by luck than judgement but I haven't had to claim on my insurance since the early 80's so I'm after opinions whether it's worth making a claim or not.

Parked in a narrow side street someone has hit one of the side steps, whacking it hard enough that it needs to be replaced. Also a few weeks ago in an underground car park in Germany despite clearing the entrance height guide on normal height easily the car park must have shrunk inside because we grazed the roof pod on the car park ceiling!!

A quote from my local Land Rover dealer including replacing both side steps and roof pod has the bill just north of £1300 Shocked

A couple of questions

1. Will the insurance company replace both side steps? I have genuine factory ones fitted that in my opinion have not aged particularly well, so to have a new step on one side and an old manky one on the other would look rather odd.

2. Is there a general rule of thumb how much they'll load the policy come renewal time and with an excess of £150 I'm trying to work out if it's worth it or not.

Probably comes down to whether they replace both steps or not as I could just buy one and DIY and
get LR to do the pod as that is surprisingly cheap at £140 including fitting.

Thanks for any opinions.

Its unlikly an insurer would pay to have the undamaged step replaced.

Buying a second hand step would perhaps match your undamaged step and you would do the job for less than your excess.

The roof pod is already less than your excess so there is no point in persuing that with insurers either. Thumbs Up

They may not pay out at all if you have not told them it's not standard, i.e. Been modified by fitting extras. Shocked
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I would only use insurance if the whole lot was covered which I doubt very much.

The steps are the genuine article and were factory fitted so I don't think Insurance would wriggle on that aspect.

They're an insurance company, of course they'rd wriggle Crying or Very sad

Undamaged, no chance for replacement.
They term this as betterment, i.e. the vehicle will be better than prior to the accident so you've no chance.

Why don't you just buy an aftermarket set from eBay and swap the pair over?

It will be two claims as well, so two lots of excesses, and two red marks against you on renewal.
