| Is it worth doing an engine swap? |

Hi Chaps.
Just signed up to the forum having loitered in the back ground for years on and off.
Some people might think I should ask this question on a RRS Forum but after reading the forums I don't think many of the forum members would consider an engine swap.
So the reason for the thread is I have been offered a 2006 Range Rover Sport HSE with a siezed engine. He wants £1000 and its has just over 160k
I would rather have a Disco but you have to take what you get sometimes.
I am not 100% sure if its financially viable but have always noted that Disco3 is full of those with experience of repairimg these types of vehicles.
I have found Leytonstone Autos via this site and they are at £3000 fitted for a Recon.
I have done some searching for a used engine and been quoted £2200.
If I was going the used engine route I suspect buying a damaged one with a good engine may make more sense.
I am based in East London/Essex so if anybody has details of a Garage that could help that would be great, or any hints or tips.
One plan I have been considering is converting it to coils and using it for Greenlaning and possibly some travelling, though that might never happen!

Thats interesting.
But is a Recon from Leytonstone with a Warranty a better bet?
I can't fit the engine myself unfortunately

Is it worth doing it??????? I'd say yes but I only have limited experience with these vehicles. You say you can buy it for a grand ( it must be worth that in parts ) 3 grand to fit an engine making a total of 4 grand, that makes that a cheap car in my world, go for it is my advice for what it is worth. If you are not going to proceed let me know please and I'll do it............

From what I hear on this forum and elsewhere recon's are a "shot in the dark" and there's something very unsettling to me about such an undertaking. The alternative is a scrapped machine, or if it were me I'd go for Disco_Mikey's offering given his reputation.

I bought from a scrappy about 7 years ago, it is still going strong in the car with its new owner.
Remember to add in the other costs that you may have, would it be worth doing torque converter, brake pipes etc at same time Joined the BMWX5 45e group

It would be a far better bet to buy a accident write off and fit the whole engine gearbox as one unit providing you’ve got the time and facilities to do it.
A lot of these so called recon engines are just that, a con 
There’s an engine for sale on here for £6.5k, ready fitted, comes complete with all running gear, tyres wheels GB, in fact it’s a complete vehicle ready for the road, cheaper than having a unknown lump fitted, use yours for spares.  It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

For £1000 is seams worth it.
Options:
Buy a used Jaguar S Type 2.7 and nick the engine out of it. (need to strip the accessories off it and fit LR bits)
Buy a LR exchange engine ~£5K + fitting. 2 year warranty.
The gearbox still has 160K miles though. Unless you know different

For sure a reputation is hard won.
That means a lot, distance is something I will have to look at.
But getting a known quantity that has been serviced properly is wprth paying for.
A mate has ran 2 X351 XJ Jags to nearly 200k (each) over the last 5 years and he had very few issues with either and engines sounded sweet when sold, they had regular oil changes and he rarely drives in congested London roads.

Gearbox is original as far as I am aware.
Good shout on chucking a new Torque Convertor in when doing the swap, hadn't even thought about that.

Would you be able to fit the engine?
I would have to research the cost to get the vehicle up to you.
Not easy to find a good specialist that wants to swap an engine in my area.
