Is it worth Saving?
Hi all new to the Disco 3 forum.
Bought a Disco 3 2 months ago and it looks like the turbo has blown. The engine turns by hand but gets to a tight spot and will run past it. concerned it could be a bent Rod.
( The Mechanics Words )
he's quoting about £4500 to replace the engine and Turbo. the engine coming from a S Type Jag.
My gut feeling is that its not worth it so maybe sell it as spares and repair, but what is it worth?
TDV6 55 plate in great condition for age. New Torque converter last year great service history all stamps present. Parking break needs attention too but otherwise nice clean and well maintained car.
Thoughts please. I'm gutted but i fear it's time to cut my losses.
cheers
Greg

Lots of factors to consider:
Mileage
Condition of rest of car
Cost to buy
What you might get back whole as a non runner
If you have space, time and inclination to break and sell parts
Your own financial needs
£4500 sounds a reasonable price to supply and replace engine, there will be parts you could sell on such as alternator, injectors, harness etc to reclaim some money backJoined the BMWX5 45e group

Well a whole Jag costs about £2200 so that's a lot of labour.

Two words: STRIP IT!
Seriously, if you have the inclination and time to do it, you’ll most likely get more for the parts separately than if you sold it in its current condition.
Investment wise, injecting more money into a failed endeavor might not be sensible if you can recoup most of the cost by selling parts and getting another used one. Of course, it kind of depends what you originally paid for it...
Play with excel, don’t make it an emotional decision.

thanks for that.
Mileage is 130K interior is in very good condition as is the rest of the car. I haven't the space to break it and as i paid 7K for it im a little stuck as to what to do for the best.
I agree the costs for replacing the engine are fair but that then puts the car value at 11K and I doubt I would get much more than 7K for it. complete. as a no runner what is it worth?
Roof Rack bars

New front and Rear colour coded bumpers
New Radiator
all pretty standard stuff
Apart from the Engine not running she is a great car!
All too frequently I have to hold back & not say "strip".

Its very easy to say strip, but having been there with my D3, sometimes you are forced down the replace track.
If you replace, you still have a D3 that you at least have some knowledge of, otherwise what will you end up with? £4.5k won't buy you much D3.
I ended up spending well over £8k on a car that I got £7k back on when I sold probably a year or so after, but it was the way my specific circumstances dictated I go.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

A car will always get to an age where it is beyond economic repair.
If the car had not broken - how long would you keep it?
If you got the car back tomorrow with the new (to you) engine - how long would you keep it?
Only you can answer these questions.
A vehicle of this age is already at the point where it is individually valued as opposed to book valued. Only you can decide whether it is worth it.
Last year I spent £7,000 on maintenance and bling for my previous D3, including £3,000 on a recon gear box - the car then killed itself in a fire but that's another story.
If it was me, taking at face value all you have said and assuming you would keep it for more than 3 years then it is probably worth spending the money - if you are certain of the good condition of the rest of it.D3 07 SE - still going strong

@gregwilmot, your maths all assume it all goes to plan, these things have a habit of finding many added costs once the car or in pieces and you are over a barrel.
You’re looking to spend prob more than the car is worth with a replacement engine of unknown longevity, as a non runner it’s prob worth £1k to £1.5k, as a stripped car prob double that range. Forget it being “valued at £11k”, it cost that and most of that value is long gone. Scrap, strip or sell as non runner, those are you’re only realistic/sensible options. Unfortunately been there, done that with clogs on. IMHO spending anything on the car is throwing good money after bad.

There are many threads along the same topic, here are a few from the very recent past:
TBH, as cars seem to depreciate very much faster (ok, they’re cheaper to start with) on your rainy island I think it makes sense to break for spares rather than rebuild unless a. Money is no object, b. Even then. Here, since I’m driving a 13 year old vehicle worth in excess of 20000 eur, it makes sense to fix. Off the cuff, no excel involved.
If you think of it as an investment, you should have a point where you’re willing to cut your losses.
If you think of it as something you want to keep, no matter what, you don’t need to have such a point but only a deep wallet. If repairing, how many years do you expect to keep it? Do you drive the D3 because of a necessity (work, large family, two dogs, ...) or because you like it? Etc.

And the vulture start warming up!
TBS always a ready market for parts, I was amazed at what sold from mine. Doesn’t take much effort to get decent payback from the car in parts.
