I've also gone withe the Comma mineral (19 quid for 5 litres here). I've got 2 300ml clear bottles which I've filled and leave in the back, so that I've got them at fill up time. I've been putting one of these in a tank at fill up (so that it mixes with a full tank). Its certainly quieter (euro 4 engine), but no real difference in mpg.

Guys, stop fretting about dye in your tank from different 2 stroke oils. These dyes are there to warn the forgetful that they have already added oil to their fuel for their 2 stroke engines or not, as the case may be. The red stuff in agricultural fuel is, it is true, a dye, but what the VOSA guys are checking for is a bacteria, believe it or not, that is added with the red dye. The presence of the bacteria is easy to detect and the quantity/density of the result tells them how much "red" you have used and for how long, roughly, you have been doing it.
SO DON'T!!!!!!!!!!! Not even once. You can't get it out, even rinsing with "white".
This is not a scientific explanation, but it is about right, as explained to me by a VOSA inspector a loooooong time ago.

Bought Wilco 2 stroke engine oil API TC JASO FB - states low ash, readily mixes with fuel, seems to do the business, 600 ml for £4

Are you sure about that? That sounds like pub talk to me, there over 100 different types of Bactria that can live in diesel fuel feeding off the oil. That's why old diesel stored in containers can become sludge like.

The colour in 'red' diesel is a marker to show the presence of the bacteria that the authorities can then test for at a vehicle check. Being checked is highly unlikely in urban areas but quite common in rural areas, especially near livestock markets on market day.
Check my info out by ringing your local VOSA office. See what they say. They have no reason to hide how their system works.

Just done the weekly shop at Tesco,bought some Tesco own brand 2 Stroke motorcycle oil for the bonkers price of £1 per litre  .Only trouble was only one bottle left on the shelf....

I was under the impression that the red dye was a visible deterrent but when they dip your tank and test it they are looking for chemical markers in the fuel. HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

Over here in 'Good old Blighty' some vehicle users, farmers etc can get diesel at a greatly reduced rate of tax 
To prevent ordinary people obtaining and using the much cheaper fuel, a red additive is added, HMRC (the Taxman  ) have mobile units and working in conjunction with the Police (who have powers to stop vehicles) they can 'dip' the tank and test the fuel for the red additive. If its found the penalties can be severe! Your vehicle can be impounded until a 'fine' is paid

Good grief! Sounds like another Gov't exercise that costs more to enforce than it saves. Sheesh. Here in Oz, our farmers get a similar deal and no-one bothers to run around and dip tanks for pirated fuel. Probably just isn't worth their while.
