xenon adaptive headlight issues |
|
I have a 2006 D3 Metropolis fitted with those headlights that are really bright and twisle around when you turn the motor on and can look round corners .
A few months back I noticed that when changing from full beam to dip beam the left headlamp was slower at dipping than the right. At the time the vehicle was under warranty and the whole left headlight unit was replaced and the problem ceased. The 'Fitter' stated that a mechanical flap which moves inside the headlight was not moving correctly.
A few months on and out of warranty , Both of the lights refuse to come off main beam.
When you first turn on the lights they are dipped but as soon as you use main beam they refuse to play ball leaving oncoming vehicle, shall we say, 'a little startled'.
Any ideas or advice will be graciously received

When I bought my D3 one light didn't react right either but using it regulary solved the problem. A few weeks ago it started not reacting again so I used it a few times again and problem solved again. It looks to me that if it isn't used regulary it gets sticky.
So switch from normal to high beam regulary and probably the shutter problem will disappear, unless off course there is something else wrong. Roel

I am on my 6th set of adaptives due to failures - the last replacement two weeks ago. Faulty shutters seems to be the problem with them sticking open and therefore full beam on all the time. Usually driving over a bump flicked them down. The sticking got more frequent and not less with more use
Sadly they are not easily repaired being sealed units either and replacements are currently ~£565 each (up fron £485 each for the last lot I had replaced). I was told by the dealer that my car was an oddity and the problem was very limited and not widespread. Fortunately for me and my bank manager, all sets have been covered by either product warranty (failed under 12 months) or under the Land Rover Warranty.
If anyone is coming to the end of their warranty though, might be worth checking the lights especially if you don't do much night driving - just in case. D3 HSE V8...

Thank you for your responses.
I find it strange that both of the headlights have stopped dipping at the same time.As i mentioned previously , one had been replaced under warranty and at that time the other was fine. Now both lights have refused to dip'On demand' at exactly the same time and , if a mechanical problem,IE the flap not flapping properly you would think that there would be some time difference in each light.
I was just wondering....If some sort of cuurent is used to flip up the flap when main beam is activated do they use gravity for the flap to come back down and cover the top of the bulb for dip beam.If so,am i experencing some sort of residual current in the system, holding open the flap...
I dont know...just speculating.
Thanks again for your replies
Please keep them coming,£1000 sounds a lot for two lamps!!!

G-Man, the left light that was replaced under warranty - if it is under 12 months old, will be covered by Product Warranty. You may have to shell out for the right hand one, but its still a saving. D3 HSE V8...

They wiill / should fit it too. If the first was fitted under warranty then the failure included the fittment and as it's under 12 months they should honour that too. They will probably have to keep the failed unit to get their money back, so cant see them leaving you with a hole and headlight in a box... D3 HSE V8...

FYI, I have had both adaptive headlamps replaced on my 08.5 model. Same problem, sticking on main beam. The replacement pair also stick occasionally, usually after a few miles when the bulb warms up. I have to get out and give the headlamp a thump.
Maybe now the nights are drawing in, there will be a spate of these failures as people start using main beam more.
As the replacements are so expensive out of warranty, it might be worth an attempt at stripping down the unit to see if you can free off the sticking flap?
