Xenon beam pattern

So a friend of mine was getting rid of his 05 d3 and I swapped headlight with him for his xenon ones. The only problem is the pattern isn’t very good, there is like a rainbow shadow above where the beam cut off is. Anybody else had this and know how to fix it? It’s on both lights but isn’t in the same place on either.

Many thanks

Pete.

If the lights still have the original bulbs I believe this can cause those symptoms, however I could be very wrong Rolling with laughter .

Cure is new bulbs

Thanks, they are Philips bulbs, not sure if that’s the originals or not but they will have been in for a while. I will try a new pair of bulbs then.

Morning,

Guessing the distance a little, they look 'low'. I have a MY2013 with factory Xenons.

What happens when you go to high beam - as the previous post suggests - do the 'reflectors' work OK i.e. do they 'flip' up?

I was just speculating, if they are set too low, then they might be hitting the reflector (mirror) causing the prism effect.

Try manually raising them up - using the adjusters at the back of the lamp assemblies.

It would help I guess if you could park it alongside a 'good' setup in order to find the right height?

Good luck Thumbs Up

It parked down hill facing my garage which is why they look low but they actually aren’t. Maybe try adjusting them to see if it helps or not

D3 xenons are the best lamps for light output on the whole range of Discovery’s, can’t comment on the D5, normally they have an excellent beam pattern and cut off, do the test you have done and stand in front of each lamp in turn to check which or both are at fault, then check the bulb is seated properly and the “bulb” part is fixed in line with the base, the pattern you have is typical of cheap Chinese bulbs, because they have Philips written on them does not prove they are genuine.
New genuine bulbs are not cheap, I have had good results with most cheap xenon bulbs only one caused a problem that was not mounted in line with the holder and had a pattern similar to yours.

Have you got headlight washers? Is there not a setting in the CCF for Xenon lamps? Just thinking the BCM may need to communicate the suspension setting to the lamp as lamp wash and levelling are an MOT requirement as fas as I’m aware.

Ok, so today I fitted new bulbs and tried moving the aim up down, left and right. All the same, no change. The shutters are moving free as well. So what’s the next step? Take the lights apart? Bit nervous of doing that to be fair but if that’s what needs doing I guess I’ll do it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Buying cheap/Chinese bulbs will cause expensive repairs to headlights. Because xenon bulbs emit huge amount of UV, there needs to be special UV protective coating on the glass of the bulb. That coating is not cheap, so Chinese don`t do it - chrome coating in headlight reflector therefore will burn out very quickly and you will see nothing on the road, even with Osram bulbs. Its cheaper to buy branded bulbs in the long term - Osram or Philips, worlds best. PHILIPS X-tremeVision gen2 are considered worlds brightest bulbs currently, road legal. Not that expensive if you shop around via price comparison websites.

I can't be certain from that pic, but to me it looks as if the levers to flatten the beam have been left in the 'continental' setting -

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic849.htm...t+%2Blever

The pattern looks very flat compared to my original fitting xenons which as far as I know (owned for 10 of it's 15 years) has never had new burners fitted.
