The odd thing is the same manual states that for 'severe duty maintenance' the transmission oil should be changed every 30,000 miles. So it's 144k for normal use and 30k if used off road?
From the manual:
"The following are examples of heavy-duty operation:
Trailer towing applications
Severe loading applications
Sustained high speed operation"
Given the cost of transmission oil vs the cost of a new transmission, and the improvement you would get in fuel economy, it seems odd that it isn't recommended at 60,000 miles rather than 144,000.

So LR heavy duty matches ZF to a point then.
It does not change what they are trying to suggest, no oil change whilst in warranty for most, but this is the get out clause then. They have quoted ZF.Series 1 V8

I had the Transmission fluid and filter replaced on my D3 at 78K miles or so. The diffs and TC oil get changed every 20K.
Our 2nd D3 had the transmission oil changed by the dealer at 30K miles or so due to it leaking.
Both will need another change in the next year.D3 2005 V8 SE Bonatti Grey "The Rhino" (our NYC D3)

So, I've looked through the official workshop manual I bought off eBay, and it states every "9 years or 144,000 miles renew the automatic transmission fluid". So not 'sealed for life' then, unless the life in question is 144,000 miles?
Also, there's no mention of a filter change, just an oil change and fluid check as we know it.....[/img]
Got to be a rare box thats done 144k with nothing done at all.

I guessed there would be some small print somewhere because at the end of the day no one could prove or disprove what the cars done. However. Does the zf instruction state anything similar. “Under heavy use change the oil sooner”Jarrod

Just a thought, At the point when a gearbox problem occurs, it's reasonable to assume the car will no longer be serviced by a dealer workshop and you would assume the warranty would would not have been extended by the owner.
