During its MoT they had fun with the handbrake but it was after it had passed. They said it came on with a terrible noise and then wouldn't come off.

I managed to replicate this some time later. If you start the vehicle but before it really starts move the stick to drive and it stops running then it slams the handbrake on squeals like a pig and will not let the handbrake off until you put it back in park turn the ignition off ant run restart.

So it doesn't need a handbrake module but I was worried for a moment or ten. Is this some kind of weird safety protocol or just my machine being idiosyncratic?

It could be that, indeed it could but why would it work normally except in that situation.

New excitement the hair trigger gear shifter. It suddenly took to having a hair like sensitivity to Drive and would jump out of drive. Park became a little touch and go as well. I suspect the linkage has become a little stiff or seizing. Banged it back and forth a few times and it definitely improved so I think the linkage is not moving as freely as it should.

Applied silicone lubricant to gear shift linkage and it immediately improved and moved freely again. May need another dose at some point. Flushed the heater matrix again, heat restored to passenger side to Kim's satisfaction. Otherwise no issues at the moment drives as it should now, fingers crossed 🤞

Oh dear. Thats done it. You've jinxed it.

The first rule of Discovery ownership. Never let it know you're happy with how's its running. It senses these things and will do something to let you know that you can't be complacent...... Whistle

I actually started to clean out my Terracan to sell it. I can hear the ice cracking under me, the Discovery has grown on me.

I have had the Terracan for 11 years. I bought it with 49,000 miles on the clock for £3000 I have driven it 130,000 miles and it has had a few issues but it has driven to Norway every year from 2012 to 2019 that's 3000 mile we flew post pandemic. It will be up for sale soon. Expecting the Discovery to sulk as a result.

Read about radio stations moving to DAB+. Does Anyone know if a 2009 Discovery 4 has a DAB or a DAB+ receiver? If a DAB one, can you get a DAB+ one and from what year did they start putting those in?

My 2010 D4 has lost DAB stations that I believe have moved to DAB+, therefore my conclusion is it only has DAB. To get DAB+ would likely require an after market head unit.
If I cannot find a good radio station I fall back to the 40+GB of MP3s I have on the USB plugged into the centre cubby lid.

Regards,
Steve

I rather think you are right but I have a feeling later model 4's have a DAB+ unit.
My USB in the centre console has never worked However I have a chinese device plugged into the auxillary input that lets me play all the music from the phone.

Went to Devon on Friday stayed at The Arundell Hotel to go Snipe shooting on Saturday so off road most of Saturday including one farm track that had astroturf from a football pitch on it. Everything else properly wet and muddy. Then drove back on Sunday. About an hour and a half into the journey home, I remembered I had the hotel's safe keys in my pocket so I turned round went back and then came home.

Kim, myself three dogs 700+ miles all completed in comfort and no major alarms. A first proper journey as opposed to a 200-mile day.

Time for new tyres.

I need a new set of tyres. I have a slow puncture in one but all are nearing the legal limit. Should I go for ultra budget tyres? In the past I have found little real difference between more expensive brands and cheaper ones. I think the cheapest I can find are 255/55/r19 111v at £70 plus fitting.

Any thoughts or experiences

personally I would always go for the best branded tyres you are willing to afford. They are the only 4 small points of contact with the road you have so just as important as brakes if not more so.

past experience and research has shown me that cheap budget tyres do not wear as well, grip as well (particularly on damp greasy autumn roads), perform as well or are as quiet as a decent mid range or better tyre.

I tend to agree about wear cheaper tyres can wear more quickly.

Not sure I could actually notice much difference in terms of grip levels or noise.

On my Jaguar I always had the cheapest budget tyres available, and they would work well. On the Talbot Sunbeam Lotus I used to put Firestone's on but in that I could get rid of a set of tyres in about 5-8,000 miles whether they were cheap or expensive, the fronts would get too hot cornering and braking and the rears acceleration and LSD.

The Terracan I switched to a different sized tyre which were the same as Hilux and bought all sorts over the years never noticed much difference, in terms of wear, grip, fuel economy.

I am not sure but I think the budget tyres have got better they are hungry to get market share.

Conversely on bicycles the best tyres tend to be the expensive ones, lower rolling resistance from new compounds and better puncture protection, higher degree of specialisation. I suppose it is the same for car tyres just that I am not a good enough driver to feel the difference.

What an enjoyable story line. I quite like your investigative skills and dedication to making it right.
We will need to agree, to disagree on the tires issue, though;)
