Ideas for off road in Scotland

My wife and I are in Edinburgh at the end of this month and our neighbour suggests we try off road driving. He regularly drives in Wales. We are hoping to drive tracks and trails and be rewarded with stunning views. Vehicle is a Disco 4 with side steps/road tyres. Are there trails that you can pay to drive yourself? Alternativly can anybody recommend a guided tour?

Can highly recommend Braemar Highland Experience

It's a guided tour, and you can't drive your own car though

Rights of Way are very different in Scotland from Wales. I think you will find what you need at the Scottish Green Road Club.

To sum up this thread - every inch of Scotland is privately owned. There are no green lanes and the only option is to use organised tours. Need to respect this and enjoy the surfaced roads only.

Not quite that simple. Much of the land is in public ownership, such as Forestry Commision (or whatever name they are using this month) for example. And there are public roads that are not surfaced.

Is the Forestry Commission land not part of the Crown Estate? I grew up in Argyll and all the land owned by the Duke of Argyll was quite strictly protected by them. Our front garden ended at a strip of land owned by the DoA which was essentially the shoreline. 2005 D3 V8

Try to contact local off-roading clubs like eorc.co.uk and bordc.co.uk.

Another Kielder option is tours run to support Northumberland Mountain Rescue. Some of the organisers used to be on this forum (Hairy Dan?). We did it years ago and it was a brilliant day out.

The forest drive is scenic but you can drive it in a car, whereas the off-road tour was fun!

Quite fancied that. Thumbs Up
I’m up in Dunkeld for a weeks hol in a couple of weeks.
Will be travelling up by Spittal of Glenshee to Braemar, but sadly after checking their website, tours stop 11th Aug.
But I will take in the minor road to the west (past Mar Lodge) and back.

However when in Perthshire I’ll be travelling on some scenic minor roads near Loch Tay eg Glen Lyon, Glen Lochay & Glen Dochart.
Done them before, they’re remote and very quiet (well they were on my last few trips).
I don’t need the “mud plugging” stuff, just happy enough on remote, scenic minor roads. Thumbs Up

Bhe website says off-road tours run till 11th Aug.
Looks good . Might try it ( and the whiskey testing) next time I’m up. (Not at the same time obviously!)
Cheers
