I have carried a knife for the last 40 years. It is intent that is everthing not the carrying.
But, should you carry for a nefarious purpose then you should be hammered hard. No person should ever have the right legally to kill another though in retribution.

I have seen the 1901, 1931 and 1961 figures before.
The 1991 figure is not outlandish and I would go with that considering the amount of net inward migration since then.

There should be mandatory jail sentence for anyone carrying a knife regardless whether it is for ‘self protection’…. Minimum term one year extending to five years for a second offence…
If it’s a machete or sword then a straight five years!
Big vote winner. Forget usual jails. A load of tents on a island just off Scotland. RAF practice their bombing using food parcels.
You give up all society's protections the moment you break its rules.
I'd get off my and even vote for Labour if they said they would do this. And its cheap.

It is an offence to carry any sharp or bladed instrument in a public place, with the exception of a folding pocket knife where the cutting edge of the blade is 7.62 cm (3 inches) or less.
A lock knife is not a folding pocket knife and therefore it is an offence to carry around such a knife regardless of the length of the blade, if you do not have good reason. A lock knife has blades that can be locked and refolded only by pressing a button. A lock knife has a mechanism which locks the blade in position when fully extended, the blade cannot be closed without that mechanism being released. A lock knife is not an offensive weapon per se, as these knives were made with a specific purpose in mind were not intended as a weapon. However, possession of a lock knife in a public place without good reason is an offence.
Possession of a multi-tool incorporating a prohibited blade or pointed article is capable of being an offence under this section even if there are other tools on the instrument, which may be of use to a person in a public place, for example a screwdriver or a can opener. It is for the person to prove on the balance of probabilities that they have a good reason for possession.
The ban is not total, it is for the person in possession of such an instrument to prove on the balance of probabilities that they had good reason for its possession. It will have to be genuine, for example, someone back packing across the Lake District may reasonably be expected to have a knife for the preparation of meals. It will be far more difficult to justify on the streets of a city or town, but there will be occasions when someone is genuinely going to a martial arts sport or scout meeting which is easily checked.
The penalty for committing this offence is a maximum prison sentence of four years.
Be aware that some bladed articles may be deemed to be offensive weapons, for example, flick knives, daggers and butterfly knives. There is also an offence of carrying an offensive weapon in public without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.
Does stop and search really work, not convinced it does as even if caught carrying it’s a slap on the wrist. And sentences for murder, i.e life in prison doesn’t mean life.
I remember sometime around 2010 it was announced that anybody caught in possession of a knife in a public place (obviously with no good reason) would automatically do jail time. After years of frustration and disillusionment we all went out on foot patrol that weekend with a spring in our stride and a promise ringing in our ears.
Never happened – the legislation got crushed somewhere. Nice thought whilst it lasted though.

A memorial for victims of knife crime, linked to an educational charity in name of James Brindley (amongst others), a personal friend of my nephew who was, completely at random, stabbed and killed about 6-7 years ago in the 'leafy suburbs' of Aldridge in West Midlands.
It's 27 foot tool, weighs 3 tons and is made with 100,000 knives, many engraved with names of victims of knife crime.
It goes 'on tour', I believe it is currently down Exeter way having been in Walsall over Christmas period. Aims to educate on the perils of knife crime and try and get people to desist from carrying, etc.

Thing is the weapon carrying scumbags find ways around rules faster than the rules can be amended.
My nephew was at Uni in Liverpool, went out with mates as usual but got very very drunk. He woke up in the morning in a pool of blood and vaguely remembered getting laid into by a couple of lads. Turns out he had been stabbed in the side between his ribs and hip with what the hospital believed was a screwdriver.

Years ago, I got stabbed with a school compass, it left a nasty gash on my arm.
Also got stabbed by a pencil, still got the graphite tip in my arm.
Finally got stabbed by a knife same left arm for some reason. Ironically, the knife wound wasn’t as bad as the other two and was the least painful.
That just illustrates anything pointed can cause injury and you can’t stop it all.
