any recommendations for an in-car gps that can import and (ideally) guide along, but at least show onscreen the imported track and current car position? Can do it with an iPad but am wondering what options I have if I want a dedicated device.

Tom tom can.
I have recorded a route on my Satmap and this can be imported into google earth and also downloaded to Tomtom, obviously it doesnt show ground features.
Also Tomtom can now record a route as you drive that you can save and follow later.

I've got a memor map GPS device. Only small 3-4" screen though.
