Transfer Case leak from Front Ouput seal |
|
Hi,
I have a 2006 v6 Petrol D3 with 254k + on the clock which has developed an oil leak from the front output seal.
My mechanic has recommended a TC rebuild but the cost ($2.5kAUD) is probably going to mean its cheaper to think about parting the car out which is probably only worh 5-7k now. I am also suspicious the AT and engine will require major work soon so time is running out for the car.
Mechanic (who i trust) has suggested the leak is possibly minor and could be tolerated so we are going to drive the car for a week and check the oil level in the TC.
As another option, has anyone had any experience with a "leak stop" oil for Transfer Cases they can recommend?

It depends on how mechanical you are. There is a Transfer Case rebuild article on this site which makes it reasonably simple. Hardest job would be getting the Transfer Case out (hoist makes it easier)

I'm not sure the rebuilding will be worth it tbh. I'm thinking more along the lines of cheap fix to get a few more months out of it.

There is a company in Tasmania and maybe UK that does a additive that "improves" the seals which may give a few months
