disco 3 2006 front diff

hey people, happy new year

im after some advice, knowledge and general help with the issue i have with my discos front diff, i had a search on here and found a wealth of knowledge on how to replace and repair, which i may very well need in the near future, but i was after a diagnoses, best that can be done online, as to weather i should replace or repair the diff

it all started a week ago juddering on left turn, slight turn or full turn, turned into a knocking noise and what feels like something slipping, like wheel spin but with no wheel spin, new drive arms where fitted, by disco specialists last year, January.

is it worth me trying to refurb this one or buy new oem or can it be as simple as a busted oil seal and the knocking is due to low oil level?

disco is currently stuck on the driveway, i refuse to drive it due to the issue as i dont want to make it worse

all advice is gratefully appreciated

Drive arms? Do you mean drive shafts? Knocking when cornering is more indicative of CV joints. From the pictures it doesn't look like the driveshafts are recently new? Diffs tend to start with a low rumble, that gets worse over time.

im with rrhool, it sounds more likely to be a a cv joint than a diff

if the symptoms are: when the steering is turned on full lock drive in circles the bad joint will crack loudly as a rule,

I have experienced similar (much worse) symptoms, caused by a transfer case. I was surprised at the improvement, but not complete cure, achieved by fresh oil.

worn diff will manifest itself over many 1000's of miles, unlikely to fail as you describe. Failure symptoms show as whine/rumble noise that gets worse over time.

Drop the oil out of the diff and take a look at it and the magnetic drain plug,

If you have lots of metal in the oil and stuck to the magnet you may have some wear, there will always be some black magnetic sludge stuck to the plug, but look out for bit bits and bits in the oil.

Either way if it's OK you've done a service item by changing the oil.
Also check the breather up by the radiator, if it's the old type cut it off and fit the later modified one.

Remember, always loosen and remove the filler level plug first before removing the drain plug, just in case.

cheers for the replies people

just taken the drain plug off to find 1/4 inch of sludge and swarf, dosent look good, drive shaft moving about 3-4mm with my hand is that normal?

had to make an emergency drive today, disco was horrible didnt want to turn left at all was crunching and cracking all over the place

is it worth me overhauling the diff with one of those bearing kit?

CV joint will be looked at tomorrow when i have calmed down, 2022 hasnt gotten off to the best start, cant get any worse!!! lol

didnt realise i had oil on the camera but you can just about see the swarf, thought id struck a gold mine lol all that shiny

that sludge on the magnet looks normal. If the bearings start to fail you get lots of shiny big bits stuck to it. What did the oil look like ?

From what you describe I think your diff is OK. Just refill with fresh oil... I think it's about 650ml but check the manual.

And also check the breather has been updated, if not then order a new one, takes 5 mins to swap out.
