dreaded rust
Hi,
D3s in to get the brake pipes done and the underbody treated, but it looks like there is a lot more rust behind the arches than we thought. Its a 55 plate. anyone else suffering badly with rust? Mechanic says it looks like it wasn't treated before it left the factory or wasn't done very well ..cheers

when I stripped down my 06 the chassis looked like it had lots of rust. However, a light brush with a wire brush and it was fine, all minor surface rust that looked a lot worse than it really was. Considering the chassis was full with clay/mud etc in places, it was very solid and would have only needed a light coat of paint.
I wouldn't be too concerned unless the chassis has "rotted" away.

I really cant believe that is the case , just a scaremongering mechanic I would guess.
pic of my chassis below after a light wash!! - you can see some rust, which just brushed off.

Once the wheel arch liners are removed, there is only grey primer behind them. This, according to Simon at Waxworks is an ideal place for rust to take hold due to leaves silt etc getting trapped behind there. If anyone is considering getting their car waxoyled, double check that they are going to remove the wheel arch liners and treat those high risk areas. Many places wont remove them, as they say the clips will break etc, Simon at Waxworks keeps new clips and replaces them as necessary.
I have no connection with Waxworks, other than having two cars done there

But has anyone ever seen any rust in there?
I was stunned by how rust proof the car is and wouldn't expect any rust issues this side of 20yrs.Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Scroll up a few posts for an example of a well used chassis... no evidence of rust of any concern.

As said, there are a few places, mostly towards the back end which suffer from surface rust. If left untreated, it may cause issues many years down the line, but for the majority of owners on here, rust will never be an issue.
And, I have never seen any rust in behind the wheelarch liners as yet My D3 Build Thread

If you have issues with rust, they are probably down to poor accident damage repairsMy D3 Build Thread

I can only go on what the guy at Waxworks said Saying that, mine were full of leaves and silt which had got in, but not back out.
