Tyre Pressures Greenlaning

Hi All,

I have 255/55 R19 Pirelli Scorpions AT Plus.
I do like them.
I am going on a trip to Sweden and do lots of gravel roads and some mud. Nothing really heavy. What tyre pressure do people use for this.
Now i am running (Road Use) iaw the sticker.
What recommendations you have for a fully loaded car( rooftop tent, watertank and more stuff.
I am thinking to go 1.8 bar front and 2 or 2,2 at the rear

That’s too low in my opinion. Unless you’re on sand.

With the AT+ and a heavy load I’d try 2.5 F & 2.9 R and see how it feels.

If it's fully loaded then you need to run the fully loaded tyre pressure recommendations in the book / on the door sticker.

If you run a short sidewall tyre at low pressures off road, you increase the risk of a pinched sidewall and thus punctures. 255/55 is a short sidewall.

Having just done an off road training course with the chap who used to be the Lead Instructor for LR I specifically asked about reducing tyre pressures and was told it wasn't necessary.

Thanks for the input, Will go for heavy load pressure for the tyres. If i find it uncomfortable on the gravel roads i might lower them a bit.

IMHO air down is only an “option” when you really need the bigger footprint (19” with 55 sidewall has the sidewall too low for a really bigger footprint) AND you are able to air up again as soon a the speed goes up, since lowpressure tyres will get hot very quick at speed

You can always air down if you get stuck in mud….so Not as a precaution with your tyre size… only in real need…

As an aside, you might wish to consider fitting 18" rims in the future.

You can usually pick up a set of genuine Land Rover ones pretty cheaply and they'll fit over the larger V8 brakes if they are fitted.

Ride quality is better and the additional sidewall height is reassuring off-road.

I think the old "big tyres, air down" idea is somewhat irrelevant with modern systems. When you have traction control that is working on individual wheels, for example, the things you did in an old Defender don't apply. Indeed, doing the old things often hampers the modern systems. A bit of wheel spin? Old day: back off the throttle. Now: maintain the throttle and let the computer work it out. Result: Modern goes everywhere the old does in a more relaxed manner.

An example: a shooting friend got his first Defender (Series type) on MT tyres. Asked me to go off road with him. So we went to Tixover. He asked what I wanted to do and I said "I'll just follow you around". He went up one climb which had a big hole in it on one side. Several attempts, got up by basically monstering it and bouncing around like a mad thing. My old TDV8, in rock crawl, just walked straight up with no drama at all. He was shocked. As were several "old school" off roaders that were watching. My old TDV8 went everywhere his Defender went and only struggled on one bit where the break over angle was too extreme.

One has to drop a lot of the old ideas about off road driving when taking a non-Series based LR off road. They will go places that amaze you.

It's worth remembering that LRE is set up show off the product. They rarely get stuck because, well, that's not great marketing.

they will certainly show what the car is capable of..if you press the right buttons...and certainly inspire confidence in the vehicle...and what it can do..and you have fun for a couple of hours ....driving cars you could only dream of before...kick on and enjoy...we also did LRE safari..which is normally open country...take it as you find it

I've driven Eastnor twice in my own vehicle. I've found trickier, but less attractive, situations when out and about doing pheasant feeding. The tracks that LRE use are designed to be passable by their fleet - and that includes Evoques, etc.

Yes. Eastnor has tracks with big centre ridges, etc., but the ground on which the tyres roll is seldom anything other than firm and well founded. No axle-deep mud, no wet grass with mud-slime that behaves like ice, etc.
