It smoked when I drove it and smoked for awhile when I switched the car off but it was not running

It sounds like it's just completely clogged up with carbon and can't burn the fuel properly.

If you look at the Wiki section or do a search, there's a good write up on how to dismantle and clean the burner if you're handy with the spanners😉
