DaveT wrote:I'm confused, or just stupid, but London to Edinburgh is about 450miles, at 30mpg = 15 gal x 4.55 = 68 ltr x .85kl/ltr (correct me if i'm wrong) = 58kg of fuel.
So how does it emit 135kg of CO2
Don't forget the O2 part of CO2, O2 has atomic mass 16 x 2 with C 12, therefore for every 12 kg of C used, 32kg of O2 combines with it giving 44kgs.
At last, I have found a use for my geochemistry learnings!

Many thanks for the info. Makes you think.
So far my Disco has emitted 11.4t of CO2 in its life.
Whilst this may be more than some cars, its a lot less than many others, particularly older cars.
Or, to put it in a different perspective, about as much environmental damage through greenhouse gases as the farts of 1.5 cows. (source: Let's ban all the methane machines. By James Bartholomew)
What if people were to focus on the whole life emissions - ie including manufacture & disposal carbon costs divided by the average lifespan of a vehicle. Suspect the answer would then be different.
Incidentally, the 265g/km figure I obtained from www.smmtco2.co.uk.
So I've emailed them to let them know it's wrong!
Dave Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Don't forget the gas that contributes to global warming the most, water vapour!

Hydrogen cars are great if you ignore the electriciy to split the H2 from water.

Like you said, the worst gas in Westwern Europe for climate change is water vapour (according to the Beeb) - so can't believe hydrogen power is going anywhere.
As far as I'm concerned the climate has been changing for millions (billions?) of years, including variations on where our planet is in the galaxy - whether my car does 20 mpg or 40 mpg makes NO difference.
Closing McDonalds would probably have more effect than removing every car on the planet. Disco 5 HSE Lux
