Flat Battery

Hi all

Took the D3 down to the Albanians for an outside wash this am about 9 ish. Left the car running whilst they did their work and then drove home, about 30 mins in the car trap.

Came home to detail the outside and inside Hoover / valet clean.

Had the engine off with the radio on ( not cd or iPod ) for the 1.5 hour duration. All finished and cleaned up when I went to move the car - nothing nowt and dead!

Got a neighbours set of leads and tried to jumpstart from my week car - no joy.

Called LRA and a local guy came within 20 mims from Alton. Got his boosters out and off it fired!

He said my leads where sh'ite and to small for the battery to beneft. He did thank me for trying before I called LRA.

He did say that most D3 cal pits are for flat batteries from the radio. Done a few trips today and all fine with starting so it must have been the radio.

Surely the battery should sustain the radio for a few hours???

I'm sure I'll be corrected if my memory fails me, but I seem to recall that TFC warned that with the key in the ignition and the radio on, the current draw is about 24 Amps Shocked After three hours you're down 70+amp-hours in a 90AH battery...

Yep, I seem to recall that half the car remains 'awake', it's not just the stereo Smile

Keep the other running and charging the D3 for about 10 minutes before starting the D3. This will bring some power back in the batery so not all amps have to go through the thin jump leads.
That's how I did it when I needed help with my Camel when the batteries were dead.

My dealer told me not to leave the key in without engine running as everything that stay alive in the car can drain the battery within 15 mins. In practice it's never this fast but they get a lot of calls for flat batteries too.

Wiljo

I've learnt my lesson (twice) not to leave the key in ignition without the engine running - it will drain the battery in no time. I can't believe there's no warning in the handbook about it.

If you leave the key in the ignition you will flaten the battery in a couple of hours as the entire system is in its wake up state, well known problem if you look back through various treads. The interior lights draw quite a load but you can turn them off auto by holding the light button until it inhibits them.
Radio works fine without key in, limited volume on hi line logic7.

PS. Get some decent jump leads.. Whistle

What happens if you just leave the radio on without the key in it. I haven't had any trouble with mine being on for quite a long time.

With just the radio on the rest of the car sleeps and power usage is reduced to a minimum.. Neutral

After an hour with no key in the ign, but with the radio on, you should be fine. After three hours however and you will still have a flat battery (as I have had) however, I just took the positive points and a jump cable between my Aux battery and the main battery, left it a couple of minutes & then it jump started with no problem at all Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

ANOTHER bonus for getting a Dual Battery setup! Thumbs Up
