I popped into to Halfords today to pick up some chrome/silver paint to touch up one of the wheels. I have used the chrome mix (more silver than chrome) before and it always matches really well. I told the kid on the counter I wanted the chrome colour (which is chrome 2). He poured 100g of it directly from the bottle labelled chrome, but when I got it home it seems really thin and doesn't cover well, a bit like it is thinned down.
Should he have put something else in like a hardener or something to thicken it and give coverage.

I was using an airbrush, but this is really thin with no coverage. I don't know what the other guy put in it when I bought it last time, but this doesn't seem anywhere near as thick.
Maybe I should leave the top off to reduce the solvent content

Nice deep sniff Andy, just don't let your mad dog near it! I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I was a bit bored so decided to give it a go. It looks OK to be honest, espcially with clear coat.
These will be the spare set for off road. Looking for a set of on road one's at the moment. Woould like to get the road set powder coated in the dark colour.

If he poured it directly into a pot for you then it could only be caused by too much solvent being (previously) added to the paint (it's unlikely to be a water-based paint), although this is very unlikely to happen at the manufacturers.
Hardener or catalyst is a very common thing to add to this type of exterior paint but would need to be added at application time, not beforehand and then stored in the tin.
It just sounds like you've had bad luck with a new batch IMO. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Unnecessary quote removed
Thanks for that, I will go with the leaving the lid off for a couple of hours to reduce the solvent then . It's definitely not water based, it smells too unpleasant.
