I am an idiot!
Noticed a brake light out last week (yet again) and attempted to change the bulb (in the rain - on a thread somewhere else - without success)
Got around to having another look at it this morning as last night I noticed one of the dipped headlamps was also out.
Having not nosed in the Fuse section of the Manual for ages and ages (at this point I'm suspecting a Fuse out - you know how it "used to be" separate fuses for opposite sides/corners etc), so I'm thumbing the manual and I see that there are NO FUSES dedicated one side or t'other so am slightly puzzled.
Take the front to pieces to extricate the headlamp (A-Bar/Lamps fouling grill and lamp guards fouling headlamp ) and find that, yes, the dipped bulb has blown. Change it, wipe of a ton of Salisbury cr*p still coating everything in and around the engine bay and replace all front end bits. Lo and behold - head lamps now OK.
So the the back end - lamp guard off, rear unit out and check bulb again. Bulb looks absolutely FINE - what's going on (dealer visit looming at this point)
And then it hits me (like a wet fish across the face) - I was looking at the LOWER bulb not the UPPER one - noticing the two wires rather than three to the plug were where the trigger for the dawning of red-faced embaressment - closely followed by the recognition that the last time I had a bulb blow I had simple SWAPPED the top and bottom bulbs over - so yes, last week I'd replaced a blown bulb.... but I'd replaced the wrong bl**dy one!!!!! Thirty seconds later, UPPER bulb swapped and hey presto, all is well in the world.
So top tip - if you can't remember tail light arrangement when the unit is off the car OR count wires to plugs then don't retain blown brakebulbs for use as tail lights - throw the bl**dy things away Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I thought I might join in this thread for a good, old-fashioned argument but no, I'm in agreement with the OP I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
