wow, there's a dealer locally here that won't budge on one without the nav for $35k and 38k miles. I picked up mine with nav and only 16k miles for just over $35k...

Supply and demand doesn't care about exchange rates. If the market for a midrange SUV is $40-55K, then that's what the dealers will charge, regardless of how much it costs to offer a competitive vehicle in that range.

(note that the competition for the D3 here is the Toyota Sequoia, Infiniti FX 35, Lexus RX300, BMW X5 and Cadillac Escalade - none of which measure up, IMHO, but all cost in the same range and thus set the price LRNA can charge)

This is not to say that the dealers are completely unable to compensate for exchange rates - they can raise the price of the base vehicle or repackage it with more 'optional' items that were previously standard. Moreover, automobile companies are large enough to invest in currency futures contracts as a means of preserving exchange rate stability for their products over a given period.

(BTW: petrol here on the Texas gulf coast is running $2.30-2.45/gal)

Don't worry you don't sound dim. I find myself reading posts 2 or 3 times trying to decifer proper English jive. If it weren't for that semester at Cambridge in '95 I'd really be feeling dim here! Laughing

One cannot buy an "unloaded" LR3 here. On my HSE there were only 3 options: Luxury Package (including cold weather), Satellite radio and Heavy duty package. Everything else was "Standard", thus driving the sticker price to a high level. Not sure we're getting any bargains on this side of the pond. Sad

Plus, I think UK prices are quoted with VAT, while quotes on US prices are sans sales tax that applies in most States.

So buy it and ship it back to the UK. It's second hand so won't attract any duty. Ok, it'll cost about a grand to get it here, a few quid to get registered and you'll be sitting on the wrong side. Oh, and throwing fivers out the window every time you accelerate. But apart from that...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been to the UK a couple of times, and one thing that struck me very forcibly is how much more real estate costs (rents, land etc)are there than what the average is in most of the US. In fact in many cases its multiples of what costs are in most of the US. Prices in the UK are generally higher than here, and I ascribe much of the reason to this fact. Retailers simply need better margins to survive.

I live in a higher cost US area for property, and this is very much the case where I live: Prices in general are higher here in the People's Republik. Red Ken would be right at home here. Laughing

You can't get an 'unloaded' LR3 here either - the base model has a lot of stuff on it, and you rarely find them on the dealer lot because they don't sell - but they allow LR to claim it starts at <$40K.

Instead, you generally find a few that have minimal options on them, usually the ones LRNA finds most popular like Satellite Radio (as if I'd pay an extra $12/mo on that)

Sale tax varies by state, so yes, US prices don't include taxes - which are considerable, but not usually much more than 6-7%. (some states charge a personal property tax on automobiles annually as well)
