new discs?

What sort of lifetime should i expect from my brake discs?

06HSE with 55000 miles and I can't seem to find a wear sensor or the rim of the disc, and although i think i have read the minimum thickness from the side of the disc I can't see how I would get a micrometer on there to measure the thickness of the outer (or inner) disc as they are sandwich together neatly!

In another issue the brakes feel very spongy and the pedal travels quite a way before stopping, changed the pads a few months ago (genuine LR), but then the backs are nearly finished, so not sure, anyone else come across this?

The wear sensors are only for the brake pads, not the discs, and these are only on the N/s front and O/s rear. You will need to measure the disc thicknesses (you can get a micrometer on there, but you may need to push the backplate away slightly to get it on properly). There should be no sponginess at the pedal though, a number of people have recently been reporting excessive pedal travel / sponginess, definately something not right there.BTW I think you are referring to the front (ventilated) discs, you measure the TOTAL thickness and you will need a 25-50mm micrometer for these, as opposed to a 0-25mm for the rears. Thumbs Up

Undo the connector in the vacuum line next to the servo and tap it onto your hand. If you see oil you have a cotaminated servo. It causes the seals to go. Get it to dealer they should replace the servo lines vacuum pump and master cylinder.

15k on the disks!!!! Did you have a stone grinding into it or Pads that you changed too late? I'd be pushing for the disks as warranty of they only lasted that long!!!!

I changed pads all round at 25k, disks were fine then and still OK at 36k Thumbs Up

Afraid it was my bad
I was expecting the warning light to let me know the pads were bad. Embarassed With the good sound system, I never heard the GRINDING until it was too late. Banging Head Don’t I feel a fool. Whistle First time it ever happened to me. Banging Head Banging Head

I will be checking the pads regular from now on. Won’t trust warning systems again. Twisted Evil

85K on mine and looking to change disks in next couple of thou miles. I dont think they really need doing but the Rear Offside brakes have been sticking and heating the wheel up to high temps. Brake pads have disintegrated so though i'd change them and clean/adjust EPB just to be on safe side.

Might take a loada pics and produce a pdf.

Are there any intructions about. Ive seen the ones in Bodsy's gallery Thumbs Up

DiscoMikey did some instructions, think they're a sticky, as well as Gareth's original changing front pads post, most of the stuff is in that zip file, but could do with combining all the detaills into one PDF if you're up for the challenge Smile Thumbs Up

presuming the vacuum line is the only rubbery hose in the whole braking area under the cover i disconnected it at the midway point and did what you suggested, I have found deposits of black liquid in my hand, I presume this means the seals have gone?

Censored ! always said the brakes weren't quite right on my D3...so we can add brakes to the list along with aircon and shaky steering at 50mph to the list Rolling Eyes

Frustrating sometimes, a car so awesome has annoying faults like this

If your brakes don't feel right then probably gone.
If still ok they will go at some point.
