new or used?

Hi all.

Not yet a D3 owner, but planning to go shopping when I return to Newcastle in June. For me, the question is new or used. I'm not sure I can justify the extra £6-8000 it would cost for a new one - how would you justify it?

If it helps the argument, I want to get one with all the 'toys' so I'm going to go for HSE. Has anything significant changed on the HSE spec in the last couple of years? I'm finding the LR site a bit confusing, and I can't work out what what's standard and what's not. E.g. Premium ICE - usedvehicles.landrover.com seems to suggest that this was an optional extra on HSE, but if you 'build your vehicle' on the website, it seems to be standard.

This a 'starter for ten'. I have a whole host of follow-up questions!

I personally would buy new if I were in your shoes. The 06 model has got the toys that mine is missing, (Blue Tooth phone etc) and the bugs are getting ironed out.

It has taken me considerable effort to ensure my dealer has kept my early D3 up-to-date with all the software fixes. Now she is a good un' but you can't be sure every other HSE owner has been as persistent.

Ah, the phone integration. That was going to be my next question.

So... How long does it take from signing to actually getting in and driving off? I'm without a car at all at the moment, after working abroad for a bit, so the 'used' option did have the additional appeal of getting me mobile again much quicker.

Oh, and how common are deals on pre-registered or ex demo models?

There are a few on here who have got good deals, and quick sales. I think if you are not too fussy about colours and spec, then a quick delivery is feasible.

Be prepared to ring around nationwide to get what you want.

Got mine 3.6k off list with free privacy glass & "wood" end caps. One of the right colour was available having been build 3 days before ordering, had to compromise on interior, alpacca rather than ebony, but that is no problem. No trade-in helped as sold last car privately.

You know, I'm still thinking that the used option might be right for me. Armed with the knowledge to spot a 06 model, I think I should see if I can't find one about six months old, that has all the toys.

There are a number in the North East, in, or at least close to, my colour, all seem to have about 8000 miles on the clock. Is this the typical demo vehicle mileage? (Or the number of miles a 'monday car' gets before the frustrated owner returns it!?)

Now I just want to get back home and start spending my money!

Off Topic

We just had a little earthquake here. That's a first for me, and I'm quite excited about the whole thing. [Goes off to check geonet.org.nz] 7.1, way up north, 600 miles NE of Auckland. 'Felt widely in North Island' so perhaps it wasn't so small after all!

7.4, not bad, as a geologist in my non-specialised opinion. I work on lavas so just know the basics re quakes. For the full techie spec have a look at http://www.earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/re...hp#details

Excellent site for quakes.

As long as you didn't spill your beer, that's what matters!

Depends what they are charging for the used ones. Well worth a go at haggling down a new one first. There have been people on here pick up new HSE's for under £40k.

I'd buy new, even at the sacrifice of buying an SE.

United Kingdom 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Auto Buckingham BlueDiscovery 3

I know it does not really count but I was looking for an ex demo TDV6S Auto and the cheapest I found one at a dealers was £30000 at the time (Jan 2006) with a list of £34000 all with between 4-8k miles and between 6 and 8 months old.
I started pushing my dealer and managed to get a new one with xeons, met and PTI for £31400 with a list of £35000
With 12 moths tax instead of what was left on the ex demo (1 month) and 6 months further away from a service aswell as 6 months more warranty I figured it cost me around £200 more for new over 6 months old with the bits I wanted that the ex demo did not have (xeons, full tank of fuel and PTI).
Buying second hand was a no brainer for me but if your prepared to look over a year old then it may be worth it but I don't think ex demo is worth the saving.

You folks all really want me to buy a new one, don't you!

But what you say makes sense. I also thought about going to SE if the deal was right. I'm looking forward to spending a couple of weeks visiting lots of dealers and seeing what I can squeeze out of them.

In fact I'm really, really looking forward to it now. These next two weeks are going to crawl, I know.

Having an HSE and regularly using an SE I would say the important things to me were, the engine, auto gear box and leather electric seats. I would far rather take a new SE than a second hand HSE as the quality of the new models seems to have improved in my personal experience.
