SHMBO used to think.... If you drive really fast you'd get there quicker which means the engine isn't running for so long = saving.

I was going to say parked....
Parked while you get a Prius....
In all seriousness, on my gasser (which I suspect might run on a higher RPM range) it seems that if I can keep it at 3k, and about 70-75 MPG, it's good. Which is the safest speed too for here....17 Discovery 5 HSE Si6, Fuji White on brown | 07 LR3 SE 4.4 Java Black on Alpaca

I think you're all a bit high.
Not a Disco but I was once forced to drive 200 miles at 50mph after a puncture and on a space-saver wheel.
Car would normally report 28mpg, this trip I managed over 40.

Agreed... now that we tow a caravan and have got used to slower speeds and sitting on the inside lane with all the lorries, 50-55 seems to give me the best MPG.

I believe diesels run at their most economical at 2000rpm or lower, so just under 70.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Dave,
Yes, Wikipedia does have this to say:
"Engines using the Diesel cycle are usually more efficient, although the Diesel cycle itself is less efficient at equal compression ratios. Since diesel engines use much higher compression ratios (the heat of compression is used to ignite the slow-burning diesel fuel), that higher ratio more than compensates for the lower intrinsic cycle efficiency, and allows the diesel engine to be more efficient. The most efficient type, direct injection Diesels, are able to reach an efficiency of about 40% in the engine speed range of idle to about 1,800 rpm. Beyond this speed, efficiency begins to decline due to air pumping losses within the engine".

I agree with dave t in that for me it's a revs thing and just below 2000 revs seems to be the sweet spot. Much over 2000 and economy begins to suffer.
[quote="NickJ"]Dave,.....Yes, Wikipedia does have this to say......quote]
but are they refering to naturally aspirated diesels (now quite rare)....or turbo charged (most common)?
I have to agree its the engine revs we ought to be looking at.......so on a hilly road or motorway the average speed would vary & it may / will vary with load. Plus there is the scholl of thought that atmospheric conditions also influence engine performance (humidity & baromeric pressure)BREXIT - done properly.
