Roof rack and ladder (fitting secondhand) |
|
I have gone and done it!
I've gone and bought a LR Expedition rack and ladder secondhand for a not too inconsiderable sum.
Now I'm going to pick it up on Friday afternoon and as it's fully built, was going to take the Father in Law and fit it to get it home. Am I being over ambitious?
I'm no mug when it comes to weilding a spanner and feel pretty confident about the whole thing.
1. Does anyone know any reason why I shouldn't do it?
2. My 06MY TDV6 HSE has some plastic plugs in the rubbery strips forward of the roof rails, is this pre-threaded to take the bolts for the forward turrets?
3. Do I need to do any drilling?
4. The ladder will have to be sorted another day, but can I buy the rivnuts and if so what size do I ask for and where from?
5. The sticky stuff for the top of the ladder will also need to be sourced, can this be bought from LR or anywhere else for that matter, is it padded or foam or just 3m type adhesive DST?
Your help as ever is much appreciated fellas.

Its easy, and its the only way to carry it. Needs 2 people to walk it into position. Takes about 15 minutes. The plugs hide the front mounts, which you could leave until later. Remember, its easier in access height! unless you are a giant.

1. No, Do it!
2. Yes but... Just to get it home don't bother with the two front mounts, the others are fine if you're not carrying any weight on it. Be careful not to over tighten the nuts when you're fitting it as the studs can snap off quite easily
3. No
4. I'll bring some to the SE pub meet next week, can fit it then too if you want
5. It's double sided sticky padded foam about 3-4mm thick, I would have thought anything similar would do The End

As Gareth said, 15 mins tops
You only need to fit the fixings on the rails at first - I didn't fix the front posts for about a month. Mind you, I needed to drill mine, your one has the holes predrilled so might be easier to fit as you go.
The rail fixings are just plates with studs on that slide into the roof rails - you then put the rack on top and screw it down. Hardest part is dropping the rack over the studs without moving the plates. If you've got a raised platform or set of steps for the side of the car it makes things very easy. Disco 5 HSE Lux

and when the two of you are "walking" it over the car into place....
make sure that you have folded the mirrors in if your coming from the front - "Funny, mine doesn't do that......."

If you follow the procedure for mounting the ladder you will have to make two existing holes wider to 9mm. Then you can fit the M6 rivnuts.
Also be carefull with the plastic clips holding the interior covers on the upper tailgate. I've broken two of them
5. The sticky stuff for the top of the ladder will also need to be sourced, can this be bought from LR or anywhere else for that matter, is it padded or foam or just 3m type adhesive DST?
Here you need double sided adhesive tape, prefferable one to two mm thickness and weather resistend.
You need also a seal that is one side adhesive and is to be mounted between the ladder and the tailgate.
Your help as ever is much appreciated fellas.

I knew I could rely on you guys, fantastic having the support from all of you.
Slimer, yes please to the fit next week, my tool kit is actually my cutlery set but don't tell the Mrs . So if anyone knows what tools are needed and have them to hand theres a pint on the bar . I'll try to locate some adhesive foam stuff for the ladder, any thoughts on where might have such a thing? Maxim mentioned some single sided adhesive which has confused me a bit. Is it single sided or double sided?
Look forward to meeting you all next week.

Oh dear, oh dear - do you know how many people with the right tools will be there now?
The foam on the ladder is double sided. You unpeel the first side, stick it to the ladder, unpeal the backing, then place it on the car. Disco 5 HSE Lux

Know nothing about it, but I'd take some old blankets to hang over the roof whilst you're walking it into position.

After tomorrow night I'll be offering rack fitting to 06MY and later for very reasonable rates, so I can get the huge debt paid off for offering beer to you lot. Big mistake!
