Hi All,
Im new to Disco3 but have owned my Disco for two and half years now.
Just wondered if anyone else has had their Genuine Landrover fitted Side Steps fall apart like mine have?
The aluminium trim which runs the length of the steps have fallen off due to the rivets holding it on corroding away!
One fell off on my drive and the other side fell off as I was driving along the motorway two weeks later, the car behind me did not look impressed as he ran over it!
Landrovers answer to this dangerous and manufacturing defect was - 1 year warranty on parts! Cant help you!
Has anyone else had the same problem? I recommend anyone who has these checks the rivets holding the trip to the step as this years salted roads seems to have taken its toll on them!

If you had them fitted at the same time as purchase (or within one month by the dealer) then they get the same warranty as the rest of the car.
I think you need to have a friendly chat with LR Customer Care (assuming you've had it from new with the parts fitted)
If you go off road, then they do take a bashing, but if normal road driving, then I think you're the first to post of this issue. Is it particularly salty around where you live? Bodsys Brake Bible

Unfortunately I had them fitted at the time of purchase but not prior to PDI which means they are not covered by the 3 year warranty - already tried that route!
I am going to push Landrover Customer Care very hard now as its a major safety issue so may have some leverage there.
No more salty here than anywhere else and not used off road.
If you have them fitted to your D3 I recommend you raise it up and have a look under the steps, as both mine went within 2 weeks!
Quality parts for nearly £500!
Thanks for reply.

I'm hoping The Large One will see this & help, but I'm pretty sure it should be covered if they were fitted within a month of purchase (did the Dealer fit them?) Bodsys Brake Bible

Check out P46 on the above link.
It will confirm what Bodsy has already said, and should put you in a strong position for another 'chat' with your dealer (assuming that they fitted them) I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Unfortunately they were fitted by a landrover specialist and not the main dealer - I ordered them from new when the car was ordered but was not made aware at the time about the three year thing!
So left me with a bit of a cold and my local dealer is not exactly going out of their way to help!
Booked in monday now with a different dealer to see if any joy there.
Looking at the ali trim the rivets have completely wasted away, this is just or normal road conditions and on a well looked after regularly cleaned D3, so not a happy bunny!
Lets hope mother hen puts it right!

I've had exactly the same thing happen to mine.
No off-roading, just motorway miles and the passenger side just fell off. The drivers side i still quite firm, but all the rivets have fallen off and rusted. and the part of the step behind the aluminium trim is covered in rust.
They seem to be about £400 on ebay so may take them off.
Anyone get them any cheaper?

Did you speak to land rover about yours falling apart James?
Mine is booked back in for another go on Monday as they are not fit for purpose, if they are willing to give them a three year warranty when fitted by a dealer then legally they should hold the same warranty if fitted by a Land Rover specialist provided they are installed in the same way!

no I haven't bothered as I don't have the time to go through all that mess, plus the LR dealer I bought the car from has now closed - Hunters Bristol.
MJ Fews as good as they are will not want to know.
I'm going to hammerite the rusted parts around the edge and then ask the father in law very nicely to weld the remaining bits of the rivets to the main part of the step. Or if i was keeping the car for ever I may have a look at drilling the rivets out and putting new rivets ion, welding them and then hammerite the result.
Either way - you are right these thongs should not fail so easily and is dangerous in your case as it fell off on the motorway. How would LR have stood up in the event of an incident?

Does anyone know if you can buy the aluminium trims on their own without having to replace the steps.
Bothtrims were missing of my steps when I bought the vehicle.

Had the same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago
Dropped of in a pub car park so no problem picking it up
Found all the rivets are shot as per everyone else’s.
Two weeks out of warranty so stuck with repairing myself.
I hope to be able to drill out old ones from trim and re rivet, will check off side at same time

Found this thread on a search as I have just spotted some rust spots appearing near the front of the steps. I wondered if anyone else has experienced this rather than sudden failure.
Mine were fitted on delivery and its 25 months old with 40k on the clock. I'll book it in to the main dealer but would appreciate hearing from anyone out there that has seen this in warranty. 2008.5 MY Discovery 3 HSE

mine had the rust spots (mostly near the front but some were down the side as well) about 18 months after I bought the car, as the sidesteps were fitted from new they were still under warranty. Mentioned it to my dealer and they swapped them for a new set without any fuss whatsoever. 1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold
