And the last sentence of DM's post!!
Daft question from a non techie but why didn't LR use "standard" screw on filters like the rest of the automotive world? Again to a non techie, this seems complications for the sake of it.

They used screw on filters on the AJV8 engine, but not on the TDV6/TDV8
On the F/L 2, there is no locating peg. Same with the 3.0 SDV6My D3 Build Thread

Is this going to be in the MMP car sales once it's sorted?
Great to see you've got access to lift for the bigger jobs

I can see why someone doing DIY could get the filter fitting wrong. Logic says you put everything back in the reverse order, rather than fit (locate) filter to block and then screw on housing. But would a local garage, not familiar with the D3 realise the correct approach?2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Both my last BMW 330 (petrol) and Audi A3 (2.0 Diesel) had "drop in" oil filters very similar to the Disco, so LR are not alone in this "technology".Clive

I can't quite make out the spigot in pics but having a VW with the same type of filter the spigot usually detaches from the filter on removal and stays in the engine which you have to remember to remove before installing the new filter.
Is there an old spigot still in the engine or does this not occur with LRs?
Don't forget that this engine was a ford/jag/Peugeot collaboration and actually designed by the Frech I believe. And is shorter than you would expect to allow it to fit east/west in the 407 for example.Mark.

Do Pugs & Jags suffer the same proportion of engine failures (for the same various reasons) that LRs do? I'm assuming the folks on The Dark Side have the same melodies, with the old RRS being a D3 in a posh frock.

Mikey's last line says it for me!!!
That's incredibly refreshing to know....part of the excitement of owning a D3 was that going anywhere in it was like playing Russian roulette not knowing if I was ever going to reach my destination....
I feel it was like pulling the pin on a grenade and throwing it in the passenger footwell.. Will it explode before I get there???? Knowing one day it would.....
It's taken a little bit of excitement out of my life... For which I'm grateful.....
Does anyone know whether the dealers have had a specific instruction on oil filter changing?
Cheers Mikey....I love you! Xx
To be honest any mechanic worth his salt would know by just looking at the filter how to fit it,, if he does not then he should not be messing with it.
Whenever I have done work on an engine I have not touched before in the past I read up on it just to familiarize myself with it.
I've never worked on the internals of these recent engines. It used to be the case that there was a bypas to the filter in the design which allowed oil to continue to circulate even if the filter was blocked. Only a set fraction of the pump output was intended to pass through the filter at any given time. Also, pistons recieved splash lubrication from the crank thrashing about in the puddle of oil in the sump and throwing it up onto the bores.
They could well have designed out the former, but surely the latter is still driven by the laws of physics?A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

The latter, to an extent. However, there are jets that spray oil onto the piston skirts to keep them cool.
