| Best way to use/organise a roof rack |
|
Hello,
Just installed a LR expedition roof rack on D3. Now I am looking for some pictures, tips ... to get the rack organised. Any suggestions? Purpose: iceland tour. (Have allready a double jerrycan holder on order.)

I bought my Expedition rack second hand, the previous owner had a base panel of 3mm chequer plate made up for it. It certainly makes the space on top far more usable and also alot stronger.
And trust me I'm about 260lbs. Will I get my rod in?

grtz,
Maxim
how do you plan to get your car in Iceland?
it's quite a time on the ship, isn't it?
if you have money for the disco and an expedition rack + double jerrycan holder (for one trip it seems), where do you get the time to spend on an iceland adventure with your own car from?
For me it has always been a dilemma. Either you have the time to travel, or you have the money to travel. Never both.
In my opinion:
- from time to time it is good to drive a different car (a rental car) to appreciate your own car even more when you come back home.
- adventure is something different. It's not about installing an expedition rack and then looking for destinations you can use it for. Leave your disco at home and do iceland as everybody else. In a Suzuki, or a nissan. And at home, dream again, driving through the city of flanders, of the expeditions you are able to undertake with and driving in your own car.

Hey Fisherman, is that the reason why the Thule roof rack had to go?

The weight limit on the Thule was about twice that of the LR rack. Or so it said, wouldn't have found me standing on the Thule though.
I have just started work on sculpting this spherical frame of mine, I need to lose about 85lbs!
There goes the need for a curry hook. Will I get my rod in?

Here's a nice example of a well used expedition rack.

Always put the kajak upside down, if not you might be carrying allmost 200L of water on your roof after some rain.

Mick you can take the thing apart any way you like really, as long as you don't mind drilling out a few rivets
BTW, Maxim, if you need to install a rooftop tent, you will probably need to do this mod as above. If you are just looking for space for a spare wheel, jerrycan etc. you will be fine. Have a look at these (Front Runner rack, I know, but it might give you some ideas)
(the spare was strapped down, the chain was just there to make sure it didn't get missapropriated)
didn't go with this one, cos the fuel load was about 120kg!
That's a gas bottle mounted in-between the jerrycans
Eventually I mounted it inside the spare-wheel - you can just see it in the top picture
Hope this gives you some ideas.
The most important is not to overload the rack! Unlock your 4x4 info, voice control, 3-flash indicators, sort out your leaning suspension, Bluetooth pairing, D3, D4 and RRS
Performance enhancement available for most vehicles, but we specialise in Land Rover turbodiesel

The car will be shipped by Samskip in Rotterdam one week before we leave by plane. So I'll be driving around with our VW Golf during 2 weeks.

@ Baben,
Allready have the same jerrycanholders on order at Frontrunner. I will not install a rooftop tent so I'll be able to leave the LR rack in its original shape. Just have to find some boxes or bags to put in some revovery-gear (air-jack, ropes, ...)
Thanks for the pic.'s

@ Fisherman,
LR Discovery spec's are: max 70Kg on the roof, with the LR roofrack its already reduced to 54Kg! With the double jerrycans it will touch the legal limts. I'm afraid the 3mm chequer plate will be too heavy (but practical)

Around €1.500. Depends on volume off the car. TDV6 (Belgian) HSE '06
