I've seen one similar on a D2 in our local Land Rover club. Works ok, as long as you remember to install it before you get stuck !!!. It does however reduce the approach angle, and Possibly more than the Fixed LR winch on a D3.

But a lot cheaper..., so may be OK for occasional use

Been Checking out the Goodwinch towball attachement, Although I'd rather have a fixed rear winch, i have to say the towball fitment looks convenient.

Does anyone know what the max loading is on the detatchable towbar. I guess there is no point getting a 5000Kg winch if the towbar is only rated, to say 3500 !!

you always used to be able to get 5000kg towbars but isn't there some EU tosh about 3500kg maximum on the road or something?

I think we may have all fallen for a poorly worded web site with the Watling winch!

Or was it only me!!

The prices shown are for the front tow bar not the winch! Seemed unbearably cheap!

I have just put the phone down and will be getting an email later today with prices. The minimum price for our kind of use would be £600 and possibly £1,000 plus!

Will let you know once info arrives.

Thanks for the gentle let down, you obviously don't live up to your handle!

All new to me, I had been looking for a simple winch that I could remove when not in use and the tow bar one made sense. Having had the problem Duncan and I had on our recce day I thought it might be a good idea.

It seems that there are some very cheap prices for winches:

You get what you pay for with winches, or so I was led to beleive.

However, Ive had a 9500 Tmax winch on my old defender now for a couple of years. It was reasonably cheap compared to some makes. It has been operated upside down, under water, under mud, is hardly ever cleaned (did it once) Thumbs Up , used to pull the defender out of some pretty solid places, and Ive never had any problems.

I think it cost a couple of hundred..

I'm sure there are many on this site who are experts in winches - comments welcome.

Question to the experts ??

Would one of these be any good as a rear winch:

Only 3000 lbs but better than nothing and cheap, coupled with the towbar mounting this could be a light and cheap alternative. For those of you who havnt lifted a winch, a 9500 lbs winch is Censored heavy and I'm not sure I'd want one rolling around the boot just for occassional use Shocked

I always find winches an interesting subject, particularly when you talk about load rating. It is always going to depend how stuck the car is and therefore how much resistance needs to be overcome. If it just a case of not enough traction on a slippy hill then a small winch will be fine. I was stranded alone once and winched my D2 up a rocky step on a green-lane that the tyres were not gripping on by attaching the rope to a wobbly fence post as it was the only thing around Shocked the gentle extra pull was enough to get up the step. If I had been bogged down it would have been no use at all so I guess the same applies to winch load ratings.

Agreed. Normally I would adopt the "buy the best you can get", but then prices get silly for something you may never use. On the other hand, if its peeing down with rain, dark and you are stuck fast, its worht it even if you only use it once !!!!

As this is for rear use I might just go with a cheaper alternative on the basis if I got stuck going in, I should be able to get out easier than going forwards. If I cant go forwards using the WARN winch then the rear winch would be the alternative.

I think I'll get one and let you all know Thumbs Up

Apparently there is a great article on winching and load ratings in the June issue of LROI. The article tells you how to work out the resistance your vehicle will will create in varying conditions Thumbs Up
