I'm in the process of fitting the D4 nav. A quick test shows it's working. Now I need to get the speed pulse from the sat nav DVD drive up to the unit in the dash. How do you get the plug out of the back of the sat nav? I suppose it is that plug that you need to splice into?

Edit: Found it! I had to take the plug apart, as pin 21 is green in my loom, not green/orange.

Well. I knew it was going to well.

All connections are made, and the screen fires up fine. The trouble is, it looks like it thinks that there is no GPS antenna connected. I have run the extension cable as suggested. It only fits one connector, so it's hard to get it wrong, but if you look at the back of the unit, there are two connectors that look like they are coax connectors. I guess the other one is for the TMC connection?

I'm a bit stuck now. Unless the unit is faulty (always possible, I guess) then it will have to come out as its not a lot of use without the sat nav function!

Anyone any ideas?

It does take a while for the Gps to lock on with the new screen fitted but once it does it quite fast after that.

But you should only have one connector that the Fakra extension lead will fit on to at the back of the screen.?.

Yes, there is only one connector that the Fakra extension lead will fit on, and it's the one shown in the pic. I see the other one is for a DAB antenna.

As I drive, I can see the map move as we follow a road somewhere in London, which must be the last place there was a valid GPS signal. This must be the unit using the speed sensor input to guesstimate where it is based on the vehicle speed, and not GPS.

Also, if you add a route and then tell the device to start, there is a message telling you that it cannot get the fuel level information. Also, on the 4x4 info screen, everything works except there is one screen that shows all the terrain response options. The icons on that screen are the same as the terrain response icons on the selector knob, but they don't get highlighted as the knob is rotated. I wonder if one or more CPU's need updating? I have a 54 reg, so it will not have the latest and greatest updates - apart from the BCM and the Engine control - they are brand new and updated.

Phone works a treat. I have a D4 module fitted and it just works, as does the radio.

If only the nav worked! I could put the D3 head back in to check the GPS antenna I suppose, but it was working fine until today. I'll also buzz out the Fakra extension lead, just in case it's duff.

Once you install this, is there a way to update, or keep the maps up-to-date? Can you use the USB sticks supplied by Navteq?

If you look at the photo posted by Wiggs, the connector marked Navigation Map Updates looks suspiciously like a USB connector (but non-standard) to me.

In messing around with the D4 sat nav, there is a section on updating the maps, but when you try, it says something like "update device not connected" - which is correct.

How it is done is anyone's guess. We need to ask a friendly D4 owner. I think that there is a separate connector in the drivers footwell for updates to the sat nav - but I could be wrong.

Out of curiosity (always a bad move ...) I took the hard disc out of the D4 unit to see what it was. It's a 40GB ide drive made by Hitachi that is used for in car stuff. My idea was to replace it with an SSD. However no matter what I did, I couldn't clone the disc to any form of image so I could restore it on another disc. It must be a very specific format it uses. I put the original back.

Still ain't got the nav bit working though ... Sad

The navigation update is done via the connector ( other end is behind the panel below the steering wheel) .

You need a code from navteq and then it allows the update from the dealer hard drive ( which contains the maps )

Interestingly the code is vin related . When I used my dealers stuff to try out some things , I just plugged a couple of different screens in my car and applied a Eastern European map to them while I was there Thumbs Up

Interesting. Looks like a USB connection to a portable hard drive.

Apart from the fun in updating to the D4 unit, one reason is to get updated maps. Whilst I'm not quite in that position as yet, assuming I get it working (!) is there a part number for the lead between the D4 unit and the footwell? Or can you make one?
