I guess that with triple shifting, clocking up 100,000 miles a year, it's going to happen sooner or later.... Rolling Eyes

We were parked at the services nr Birmingham a couple of years ago and got talking to a group of wombles. Their view was the discovery was the nicest vehicle to be in all day with more presence on the road than the shoguns. But the discovery reliability was dire with gearboxes and transfer boxes popping all over the place they were in some doubt the ha would keep on buying them especially since the shotgun was a third cheaper.

D4's or D3's?

Not sure I'd want to look at a Shogun if it's only 1/3rd less than a Disco.

I spoke to some at the Kent show a few years ago when they were running D3's they said the reliability was bad and the D3 was always off the road, however they prefered to drive them over the Shogun. Spoke to them again at the show two years ago and they said there was no comparison now D4 was very reliable in comparison to Shogun and won hands down over everything. They also said if they had to tow anything the D4 was the vehicle for ity everytime

I had a d4 and don't get the logic they are more reliable than a d3. The d4 has a twin turbo set up which is more prone to problems. Other than that it's the same engine and transmission with slightly bigger brakes. Same poor quality diffs and jag auto box. The interior is loads better in a d4 but other than that it's just a face lift.

Turbos more prone to problems?
Same engine?
Same gearbox?
Just a face lift?

Don't recognise any of that at all.

Same engine? What's 300cc between friends?
Same gearbox? Yes til the rotory do-dah came along.
Just a face lift? Well I can't tell the difference externally if I can't read the lettering, see the grille or see the fake air intake. And from the B pillar backwards it's the same apart from the beige trim. Interestingly they didn't call the 3.0 RRS an new model. Whistle Whistle

I rest my case m'lud.

Ducking for cover. Whistle Whistle

Oh, and if it's a completely new car why's it still the L319? Whistle

Just going back to the start of the thread, I was only reporting what two Highways Agency staff who spend their entire working lives driving them, up to 330,000 miles, have to say. This doesn't mean that those that have have problems are in any way wrong, but haven't those issues already been aired elsewhere on here?
As for the gearbox being the same, one's a 6 speed and the other an 8 speed. Am I missing something?
So far I've learned that there seems to be a fundamental difference in the wiring between at least early 3's and 4's after the early looms were badly effected by water ingress, or is this wrong? (I'm still new here, so I'm trying to play catch up!)

Just because they might appear the same, they aren't - components change all the time, designs are refined, software changes etc...it means even within MY there are changes, some you see and some you dont
