United Kingdom 2016 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 SE Auto Corris GreyDiscovery 4

I saw what appeared to be the D5 yesterday. It was on the A45 near Coventry, covered in the black and white camo being closely filled by a RRS.
From what I could see it had the familiar Discovery shape but wasn't able to tell much else.

Really hope they don't ruin the Disco, it's already such a great car.

As a previous Freelander 2 owner, I can safely say that they ruined the "Freelander 3", which is how I wound up here! Rolling Eyes

Like nearly all of the current generation of LR's, expect form to take precidence over function. As an Evoke XXL, I'm sure they'll sell everyone they can build. Just not to me!

God, I'm used to that hoary old chestnut of an argument! Laughing

But, even after this time, I still wouldn't give drive space to any of the following:

The Citroen C5 vs Citroen XM (2001)

The MINI R56 Vs MINI R50 / R53 (2006)

Volvo V70 phase III Vs V70 phase II (2007)

And now DS Vs FL2 (2015)

Each change caused me to move on and find something new; I don't think D5 will be any different! Wink

2016 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 SE Tech Auto Fuji WhiteDiscovery 4

Just thinking about my options with respect to getting one of the last D4s to be produced next year, how much do you think the impact on the resale price of a my16.5 2016 D4 will a D5 when they have been around for 8mths or so? Was there much of a drop at the 8-12mths mark after the change for FL2/RRS when DS/new RRS came out?

many thanks

I can answer that one.

I traded a two year old FL2 in just before the DS was launched and a year later (very oddly), I did exactly the same thing again, so I have direct experience of this with my very own money.

Now, here's the surprising thing; the FL2 has held its value usefully better since the launch of the DS than before it! I suspect that it's down to the DS simply not being a direct replacement and a significant number of customers then being forced down the near new route. The eye watering increase in the RRP of the DS over the FL2 helped as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if history were to repeat itself.

Meanwhile, would you really be happy with a D5 from the first 2 or 3 year's production? It's not a risk I'd want to take!

John

I think you're either lucky or you're not. I had an early Evoque, didn't have a single problem with it. But this Discovery has been and still is a complete pain in the Censored and they've been making them for years.

The support, aftermarket and opportunity to get a top spec at a reasonable price decided for me.

I don't know how the new one will look or perform for what I use it for and my next car will definitely have hybrid capabilities so I need to see it and give it a year or so bedding down, and a chance for the aftermarket lot to catch up.

That means 2018 so happy to enjoy one of the last of this gen Very Happy

We've had Discos since the Series 1, must have had 8 or 9 and currently have a D4 (along with a TD5 Defender and an Evoque).

Based on what Ive seen of the D5, I am thinking the replacement Defender may be the next choice. Given that the new Defender wont be anything like the current Defender, I wont be swapping my TD5 for one, but the D4 to new Defender may be a good swap.

I'm not sure that's what Land Rover want, but their current swing to less utilitarian vehicles and always pushing "premium" designs means we are going to move down the range. The amount of gimmicky tech on the new models is getting ridiculous.

Just my current 2c worth..Wink

cheers

Agreed.

Though my new D4 will have to put in many years of service, it's highly unlikely that the D5 will even be remotely relevant as a potential replacement. There are a lot of hopes riding on the new Defender filling a large void left behind when the D4 is discontinued.
