D4 died on A34 today! Crankshaft sensor error?
I'm writing from a lay at just south of Newbury waiting for the AA Recovery truck!
Disco4 has recently (last 3 weeks) developed a hiccup/jolt once every trip, but normally carries on. It got to a point where I could predict roughly where it would happen. About 10 mins into journey, once out of town, warmed up and up to speed of 70mph on dual carriage way.
However, today shortly after the usual hiccup/jolt, the Rev counter dropped and the engine cut out. The message I saw first was 'Gearbox system failure' across the top of the central display in the speedo pod, or something similar. Then a series of orange lights saying things like 'brake assist' and traction control not being available. The Dynamic stability control and Brake symbol stayed light up in Orange. There was another text message in the speedo area but I missed what that said.
By this point the engine had cut out but luckily there was a lab by ahead which i coasted into.
I left it for a few seconds and it did restart. I waited in gear for a while, it ran for a while but then powered down and died. Restarted a further 3 times and it died again on its own.
On 4th restart, it continued to run/idle ok, but I didn't want to risk it in traffic on busy A34, with no hard shoulder, so called AA.
He connected his tablet gadget and got the following error code; P0336 Crankshaft Sensor.
Any thoughts and suggestions?D3 S 2006 - 2013

Known issue with the crank sensor and/or trigger wheel on the end of the crank...
Neither are particularly easy to replace, with the latter necessitating gearbox removalMy D3 Build Thread

Sorry to hear about this, thank goodness there was a lay by you could get into, I take it the AA could drive your car onto the transporter as 8 speeds lock into park automatically when the engine is off and I guess would need to be dragged on with skids. (does anyone know if there is a way around this?)
I hope it is an easy fix.

Happened to me just before Christmas. It was the Crankshaft Sensor. If your vehicle falls within a certain VIN range - details are on TOPIX, then it is recommended that you replace the Trigger Wheel as well, which is more involved. The total cost was £1,440. LR allow 7 hours labour, my main dealer told me it was more like 20 hours by the time they had finished. Parts are just over £400, the rest is labour and they took three and a half weeks before they could repair it, although it was over Christmas, New Year to be fair. Is your vehicle long out of warranty or covered by a warranty?
Done about 1,000 miles since it was repaired and fingers crossed, all has been well. The only negative is my MPG seems to have gone down for some strange reason. Not by much, just a couple of mile per gallon.
Here's the TOPIX reference,
The chassis ranges Landrover suggest, if renewing the sensor it's advisable to renew the pick up ring.

They don't seem to know why the sensor goes, but it does cut out periodically and therefore pre warns you by a week or so and i didn't get a straight answer out of them about the Trigger Wheel, but evidently or so I am told, a technical bulletin goes out if three or more cars are reported by the main dealers in the UK as having a particular problem. My interpretation is that's not right and there must be an inherent weakness with a particular batch of Trigger Wheels within that VIN range, but purely speculative.

Had this on my previous MY12 exact symptoms as you when it finally died ended up in a ditch (single track road) as the steering lock engaged whilst I was still moving and I lost control. dVSA still investigating that. Got it repaired under warranty so not sure of cost but never had an issue since.

Wife was driving when it first developed the symptoms at a busy roundabout. She was stuck blocking an exit lane for 10 mins, getting tooted and sworn at, fingers stuck up to her.
Happened to her a few days later in a Morrisons Supermarket. AA diagnosed it, but she was able to restart it and drive a mile along the road to the main dealer with the AA following her.
Thing is you tend to distrust the car now, hence we went for a replacement.

Thanks all, for the feedback and advice.
It's good to have an idea what the problem is likely to be - even if the repair bill sounds scary. It went out of warranty in September. Read all the different views on here about extended warranties - got quotes from WarrantyDirect, but decided to risk it, having had two years trouble free prior to that - in stark contrast to my previous D3! Might be having second thoughts about that decision right now!
Is the stutter/jolt I've been experiencing a typical symptom of this crankshaft sensor fault? I ask because when it first started and it almost died a couple of weeks ago, I took it to my local LR specialist and the only fault code at the time was a 'fuel pressure sensor' error. So the crankshaft thing seems now quite different? Is that just a coincidence?
With regard to winching the car up on to the truck, luckily the car could be started and he could get it out of Park before winching it up. I asked him when unloading what would have happened if it wouldn't start - and I just got wry smile and a comment to the effect that it's a bit of a nightmare, but no mention of how.
Have to say, AA service today was pretty good.D3 S 2006 - 2013

Yep, the jolt/stutter is a symptom.
Try LRCS and see if they will make a contribution or pay the lot. They did with me, but I had purchased and serviced the car with a main dealer, whom was on my side I have to say.

When my D3 conked out on the M5, we couldn't get it out of park (that was me), so the recovery guy put thin wedges on front of each wheel to help it slide onto the truck, on a good flat surface it would be fine, problem was my car was partly in gravel and partly on tarmac, it was fun to say the least.....
I would be in touch with LR to try and get them to contribute to the cost as they obviously know there is a problem.

If you can't start an 8 speed car, take out the cup holders and you will see a big red handle. You simply pull this to get out of park. There is a topic somewhere with pictures.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Thanks for that, I wondered what that was for, I noticed the other day when I was fitting the fridge in the centre console
