the dog(s) must have been messy. Assuming they've cleaned the car, leave a box full of fresh grass cuttings in the car overnight and you might find the smell is gone.
the previous owner should have got the right accessories; we have two dogs, 57'000km and simply have the rubber mat for the luggage area. No smell at all. D3/TDV6/HSE Auto/Tonga Green/Alpaca - stolen by my wife now (and she's dinked it! )

that is no big deal. just get some sent elimination spray like you use when hunting. a friend got rid of the mell of spoiled milk with it. 2005 SE-7 BLUE
