Now so many of our motorways are being converted to 4 lanes, you can see the confusion with some drivers because there's no middle anymore !!! Laughing

The overhead signs tell you what's coming up in plenty of time hence the charge of driving without due care and attention. Rolling Eyes

Not always. The M6 is 4 lanes N of B'ham, you get about 50m warning (if that) before it goes 3 lanes. I just don't use lane 1 as I don't do it enough to remember where the change is.

Bit N of J10 northbound. Looks like it's changed a bit as now part of this smart motorway malarkie. So if the hard shoulder is being used you're OK, if not you've got no time to get yer ar$e into what is now lane 1.

ISTR there is a similar no notice section between the M42 & M5, again on the M6 northbound.

That's the one, I live in the next village on the A449, M6 still comes to a stand still, Thursday and Friday afternoons even with four lanes. Censored

This country has to be the worst in the whole of Europe for it. It's drives me mental coming up through the road works between 16 and 19 on the M1 nothing but muppets sitting in the middle lane doing 40mph with nothing in the inside lane. The classic move has to be the ones that move to the 3rd lane when when you come up behind them Confused

Having lived in Germany for many years I can confirm that the UK is 10 times worse for lane discipline. But if you want to see the worst lane discipline in the world and probably the universe, take a trip to the United States of America where it's beyond belief. I reckon Kabul is safer to drive in than New Jersey.

I have heard the states is beyond belief, I drive right through Europe I know how bad this place is well I say place more so the M25 M1 and M6.

The M40 has to be the best motorway England has imo.

You do get numerous warnings of a lane drop....with signs always from one mile out on overhead gantries. Then you will see the line dividers go to hazard lines from a minimum of a 1/2 mile out.....then loads more signs..... Shocked

If iam honest i pick and choose when to use the middle lane. This is because the inside lane is so badly damaged and have a lot of sunken train tracks that it makes the journey more enjoyable. It's the people that use the middle lane and keep at the same speed that Censored me off.

What annoys me is when there are two lanes and on the inner lane about a mile ahead is a truck and the outside lane is occupied by about two dozen cars already anticipating overtaking the truck nose to tail travelling at about half the allowed speed limit.
I could well undertake but that does not sit well with me, if I move over to the inner lane the outer lane just fills up even more.
In Europe all would be in the inner lane until such time as they are near enough to overtake the truck.
