My previous car was a 320d and I was really amazed how good it was with winter tyres in the snow, again vredestein.

I had to abandon my merc on the M20 a few years ago due to snow, wife has had a few mercs in a row, winter time meant bags of gravel in the boot and very quickly we realised all season or winter tyres were handy to have all year round so thats what she ran, made a huge difference in the wet when accelerating from a standing start over wet manhole covers, which ordinarily would light the tyres up and the car would take the throttle away, winter tyres stopped this happening dead.

Interesting - at least in Finland Nokian Tyres states that one should not use friction type winter tyres all year around. Doing so makes them wear out faster at the very least. See FAQ at
Of course we who use studded winter tyres need to change them twice a year as they’re not legal to drive with outside winter season.
I had some years back a rear wheel driven Mercedes and while some people argue that it gives a better feeling to the driving I sometimes had the feeling that in curves it would have set off in the tangent’s direction if I applied more gas when road was very wet or snowy. also needed to have more weight in the trunk in the winter even with studded tyres to keep it from slipping....... not a problem with front wheel driven Volvos, though.

Now RWD cars really do need proper winter tyres just to make progress.
I sort of subscribe to that view. For me the correct choice of tyre that balances normal 'farm' type work (not mud-plugging) with good on-road performance - and then able to cope with some snow (not alpine) would be the one to head for. Most of us that use these vehicles for daily transport and varying needs need that compromise?

For me, even with a 4x4 winter tyres are highly desirable. Tests back this up. For example:

I've seen them before, also just found one saying AT tyres were terrible 58 meters to stop an SUV in the snow, 29 on winter tyres.

Winter tyres on a Disco are a waste of time in UK IMHO, they will go anywhere without them, just give a slightly better stopping distance. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Four wheel drive doesn't help when braking/cornering. That's the point at which winter tyres come in to their own on.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I always though like that until I ended up t-boned by a lorry as he couldn't stop and neither could I, I have fitted winters ever since, Slightly better stopping is a bit of an understatement, winters are normally 50-66% better stopping. so with winters two doubledecker bus's to stop in length, AT tyres four doubledeckers. Normal car tyres 5 doubledeckers just to try to add a bit of perspective.
But ultimately you don't have too, I do because of the above accident, that make me feel safer in the winter.

+1 ... When it comes to stopping.. all cars have 4 wheel braking. 3 tonne needs all the help it can get

I've used Nokian winter tyres over the past few years. On Disco, Scooby and a Merc van.

Try driving on snow covered roads with / without winters. You'll soon be converted ...

I wonder how much better are something winter dedicated like Nokian Winter SUV than something like Pirrelli Scorpion Zero. I have scorpions on currently but there are no sipes in the tread. Any ideas?

I have Nokian SUV3s and they have lots of sipes. This (apart from the rubber composition) is what makes them outstanding on snow and in the wet.
