I test drove a Disco 3 today. The dealer told me that it was originally a Commercial, but had later been converted to a normal saloon. But as such it retained its Commercial road tax of £250, for its year it should have been £535. Does this ring true ?

I did look at the V5 but I was unaware of the various codes, I just remember NOT seeing the word commercial. This is only of curious interest, I don't intend buying the vehicle. Mainly because it appeared to me that the spec was below basic, probably because of its past. Thanks for the info.

Mate
Dunno about Discos but that’s certainly the case with my Defender
Can’t remember about the VAT at time of purchase but she needs a different class of MOT

My guess is it would have to undergo single vehicle examination ( much like a kit car ?) to get the V5 re-issued to show it as M1 by DVSA??

Just looked at my V5 which is a Disco Commercial MY13.
It states:
[X] Taxation Class: Light Goods Vehicle
[J] Vehicle Category: N1
The road tax last year was £230 (due 1st March 2018 so not sure what price increase there will be).
Just pointing out one of my previous posts.
As someone once pointed out to me, warranty issues with the dealership upon finding 5 (or maybe 7) seats in your Disco Commercial may be the least of your problems if you make an insurance claim.
The vehicle log book states 'van', 2 seats, Commercial use etc.
Having an accident and multiple occupants may leave the vehicle uninsured, your passengers uninsured, any other vehicles involved entirely your liability and to finish the day off, potentially arouse the suspicions of HMRC over VAT usage!
Just saying that's all "Track day running - Don't put your foot back on the accelerator until your absolutely sure you don't have to take it off again"
Current Ride: D4 XS Commercial Baltic Blue SDV6 fully loaded with heated everything
Track Days: BMW E36 M3 Evolution MY 1996 (3.2 Litre 377 BHP sat in 1,250 Kgs of car, with a pro safety cage and some serious braking power)

Here in Ireland my insurance company said if I provide a garage report that the correct seats and safety belts etc have been correctly fitted then they would insure it as a passenger vehicle. BUT separately you have to get the vehicle Reclassified as a crewcab(not an option here anymore )or a passenger car or Revenue will be after you.

I was also told today re insurance, that if you try to insure it, and you tell them,,, or they check and find out that it is commercial, they will charge you more because of possible contents in transit. So it will bite you one way or another.
