May i ask for advice plse , re, A bar

Hiya

Hope everyone is keeping well , May i pick ur brains and expertise plse

Got a D3 A bar off EBay that needs some work , small section and another small crack ,

Have never done this before but do enjoy learning and wondering if the following would work plse

To glue the piece back together using some PU glue

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PU-MASTIC-CAULK...0112601775

Also using some 3mm plastic pegs to help stabilise the section

Is there any special cleaner process that I need to do before gluing , would something like sugar soap be ok to use plse

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-3-4-5-6-8-10-...2478478452

Then after glueing , to use a round small Dremel bit to cut a small groove / channel around the edge , then use some flexible filler

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FLEXI-Car-Plast...2738724532

Wash down with something like sugar soap, as I have a couple of bottles

Sand down , wash off, allow to dry , then spray primer

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/High-Build-Fast...6271d1c0ee

Carefully use wet and dry after applying a couple of coats , wash again, allow to dry

Then use some textured paint

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-BUMPER-TE...100623.m-1

So what do u think plse , as always is extremely appreciated

This will be a really nice winter project for me that I can spend weeks / months on once I’m back on my feet properly

Many thks Bow down

This is the crack, would it also be wise to again use a dremel to cut like a V into the crack and then use the above filler

Hi,

First think I would check with the mastic is that it sets as some stay flexible, in this case it may not matter too much. I wouls stick the broken peice in with the mastic and allow a bit to come out of the joints and the scrape the excess whilst still wet. Then when semi set texture the seam with a peice of sandpaper or a sponge that gives a similar finish to the rubber, probably like 800 or so you could practice on a bit of the mastic spread on a scrap of wood etc.
You may find this gives a decent finish and can then do the same for the crack, but you may have to, as you say, cut a bit more out to get a better fill, but i think a small bead of mastic then texture as above.
In terms of painting, a textured paint could work. But my first attempt would be with Plastidip as this can peeled off it youre not happy with it. I've just done my wheels which were rotten and there come out OK.

I used this:)

I am planning to do all of my arches etc in it as I'm really pleased with the finish.

I am sure others will have some advice, but wanted to offer mine after all the help you've given.
Cheers Paul

Gary, not sure if you've fitted the sliding floor yet, but if you have a dog guards I have a simple mod to fit them. Let me know and I'll take some pictures.

Hi paul

Bless and thank u so much as it’s really appreciated Bow down

That’s sounds a great idea ref the mastic and using sandpaper etc to get a similar finish , think that was another reason I looked at that textured paint but like ur idea

Will also check out that plastic cote , thks for that and ur wheels look brilliant , bet ur also really pleased with them

Got to do 2 x alloys myself , seeing they both Censored leak on the rim, looks like some balancing weights had been fitted in the past and the paint has begun to lift causing the leak

One wheel is round the back of the house without a tyre and the other on the front of the disco , so need to get that off , hoping by using some 3 foot bars to see if I can push it just enough off the bead, to then use an electric file sander and then reinstall

I haven’t actually , ref the sliding floor, my Censored back has seriously put me behind as I want to first get my brake hoses done before the winter is upon us , making me stressed as I keep looking at the disco but can’t do anything at the moment

Haven’t got a dog guard as candy lays on the middle seat with a harness, yeh i know spoilt Laughing

Did get some spare door handles and finished them before I stupidly fell over , done 3 x primer and 4 x finish plus 2 x lacquer , has a Matt finish

my spare bedroom is slowly turning into a type of workshop, will set up an old table / chair so can carry on with my projects over the winter , can then shut the door and open the windows if I use any spray cans

Ur so welcome and is always a pleasure to help wherever possible , really enjoy giving back to the community as much as I can

Thks so much once again and can’t wait till I can start my projects again Whistle

The handles are looking good Gary. I will do a write up on the dig guard at some point as it may help someone at some point, or if Candy has to go on tha naughty step Wink

Many thks, sorry should have said I used Hycote for the handles

Also have a HSE style front bumper with the fog / PDC/ holes already there , but will need to get some fogs lights, Etc so with that will be nice to get the A bar fitted as well

Did start sanding the bumper down, , very tempted instead of having the gloss black in the middle of having it all in Matt black , , so will then match the bumper ends , wheel arches etc , might look horrible but really fancy doing that for something different , can also pre mount the A bar on this bumper

Plus instead of the usual spots on the A bar I’ll look at some lightbars , but that’s for later

Will be interesting to see how this cheap shot blaster works out , got fine glass media in the end , will be for the spare wheel rim and around the towing sockets , don’t mind being the guinea pig

candy on the naughty step, never , anybody think she was spoilt Whistle

Sounds a great idea doing a write up regarding the dog guard

Have u also got projects lined up over the winter plse , blimey I’m gassing again

Thks again Thumbs Up

Ps, tempted to leave it debadged

I like the look of the plastic/foam a bars, but they make engine access such a bar steward.

Hi mate

funny enough u saying that I wondered by how much it would cause problems for engine access , , so thought maybe how hard would it be to have some form of a hinge system so it can be lowered forward

As it came without a fitting kit I’ve been studying of how they are fixed , see the fixings kits by the looks of it have been obsolete for a good while

See they have 4 x bolts at the bottom and then fixes to the top of the grill and scuttle panel by means of 2 x plates

Then maybe large spring pins at the top and some form of hinge design at the bottom

More than likely going to fit it in the spring time so gives me plenty of time to repair it and also see if I can come up with some viable options

Hope this finds u well Thumbs Up

Let me know how you get on with the shot blasting as its something I need to do. I have a bottom fed blaster that came with the compressor but TBH it'd be better just throwing the media at it!

If you're not sure on the colour with the bumper you could try the plastidip and if you dont like it, peel it off and paint it gloss. Also, if you're fitting light bars is there any way you could fit them so they hide the damage to the A bar?

I haven't found the A bar to be too much of a hindrance as yet, ive done the egr blank and a service fine, but i suppose there's still time! Mine only has the brackets at the bottom, for some reason the top ones have been cut off at some point but it doesnt appear to have made it less stable.

Hi paul

That’s a shame ref the shot blaster and of course more than happy to let u know how it goes , alas might be new year by the time I get everything else done Laughing

Did think about maybe fitting a light bar on the lower bar to cover it, even thought about a wrap but will indeed see how it progresses if I’m able to cover it enough

Many thks as Will get a can of the plastic coat and good that u can peel it off if u don’t like it

Wondering what did u do about ur number plate on the A bar, did u fit the plinth or directly to the Bar plse

Thks so much once again Thumbs Up

Personally I think that would spoil your car. It currently looks modern with that nice grill.

And yes they do obstruct working on the rear of the engine, and re belt etc.
