Auto Transmission Fluid Change

My 2005 D3 auto had a new gearbox & T/C around 30K miles ago. I have the receipts for all the work.

On the receipt it states "Auto Fluid ZF6 Synthetic 9L@£12.50/Litre". The receipt also has a stamp for an additional fluid change after 500 miles... so all good Smile

I decided to do a bit of preventative maintenance today & change the fluid again, so I got 10L of Manol AG55 and a pressure sprayer & pipes.

Everything went really well, no spills etc.. I pumped out 3.9L of oil fluid into a big barrel, then pumped in 3.8L of fresh fluid. Waited 15mins and repeated, again 3.8L of old fluid pumped out & 3.8L of fresh pumped back in.

The only thing is the old fluid was red, dark red, not black or bad, but definitely red .

I thought the correct fluid for these boxes isn't red ???

Anyone comment on this please.

As the job was so easy I bought another 10L of AG55 and then I'll have 12L in total and I'll give it another good flush to get rid of the old completely.

By the way 10L of Manol AG55 can be had for £36 on the net at the moment with free delivery.

Thanks

The color thing is, in my opinion, a red herring. And more of an old wives’ tale. As far as I can tell it originates from the time some vehicles (FFRR at least) used Dexron fluid in their GM transmissions. Dexron is red. The reason the ATF is dyed is to distinguish it from engine oil.

Unofficially, at least in UK, I’ve understood that several garages won’t service or give a warranty if red fluid is in the box.

On the other hand, I’ve got red dyed BG Universal ATF since 80k km back and there isn’t anything obviously wrong with the transmission. Spec-wise it meets or exceeds the JLR requirement according to BG.

So YMMV.

Ps. Call the shop and ask what they used?
