How would you finish a split vehicle journey where the second half is between 5 and 10 miles?

eBike carrying and charging

Hello! I am thinking about building an eBike storage and charging kit for vehicle loadspace and I wondered if this is a marketable idea. I want to drive to the edge of the town I work in, park and beat the rush hour traffic on a bike. This is a pretty common concept but I have my eye on a folding eBike and it would probably live in my car, hence building a box and inverter kit so that it is always topped up. I might use a bike rental scheme if such a thing exists where I work.

Does anyone else have this need? Could this be a good idea or are there alternatives?

Thanks,

Jimmy

Not sure if this is of any help but I have two of these screwed onto a length of hardwood that clips in under the securing rings in the boot. Just take the front wheels off and there is room for 2 full sized bikes, but you have to have the back seat down.

Needs “full size bike in car” option, which is what I do on service days.

(IMO, folding ebike combines the worst type of bike with the faff, expense and weight of a motor and battery.)

Something to bear in mind is the vehicle battery, you wouldn't want to get in the car in the morning to find your bike charged and ready to go but the car won't start. If I had anything to charge when leaving it in the car I would do it using an aux battery to avoid the starter one to be run down.

Have you ever ridden a Brompton? If not, go and try one.

Yes, I have. Didn’t like it- awkward position, crashy feel on uneven surfaces, felt like it was going to wheelie when starting off at pace, horribly unstable and hard to recover from a severe unbalancing event. However, as the premier folding bike, it’s the best for luggage racks and swiftness of folding/unfolding. You’ll also get the most money back on resale. If ride is important, a Joey Airnimal beats it hands down.

I’m slightly confused as to the poll, as the OP states that he is considering a folding ebike, so I’d expect the options to be more along the lines of “if I made an inverter kit for ebike battery charging, who’s interested?” IndusD4 makes a good point, and I’d have thought that an auxiliary battery & split charging is a pre-requisite.
