Suspect Crossover Pipe Leak assistance required |
|
Hi All
I have tolerated a slight 'rasping' noise on acceleration now for a couple of months but feel I need to get it identified and sorted.
I have read all the articles and debates about whether its a 'body off' job or gearbox drop only, but before I commit to having this done, I need to try and identify where exactly the leak is.
I tried to have a look and see where its coming from but difficult on the driveway.
Its perfectly useable at the moment and I'm in no immediate rush, but would like it looking at.
Is there anybody able to offer me some guidance / assistance with this? I don't mind getting my hands dirty and can manage most jobs, but afraid this may be beyond my driveway skills if it is the crossover pipe. Happy to assist though.
Any info appreciated

When mine went I could push by hand up (undertray removed) from below and feel the gas escaping.

Many thanks.... I'll give it another go if the weather improves this weekend....
I think it is a very slight leak as you cannot hear it under normal driving conditions.... only over 2k revs when turbo is on boost when it starts to rasp.... hope its nothing more serious
Thanks

Ok.... took adavantage of the dry weather and had a poke around under the car today. Managed to get a couple of small jobs done and in particular had a good look to see what is blowing at the front.
It appears that there is black soot on the heatproof wrapping around the crossover pipe, but I cannot recreate the noise by revving at standstill as it only does it under load.
Also.... when I rev the car I get a fluttering sound as the revs die like the rally cars when they have fancy dump valves.
Is there anybody in the northwest that can be recommended to have a further look to see if my crossover pipe is foobarred......?

Possibly..... although mine is manual would it have a torque converter? and I've never heard this noise before, only since the other started.

I think everything is pointing towards it being the crossover pipe, so next thing is to find someone to take a look.... any suggestions first of somebody doing it without body off...?

Ok it's been in the garage today and it's confirmed as a split in the crossover pipe as suspected.
The estimate for work is eye watering so wanted to ask if anybody in the northwest is able to assist with changing the Pipe without body off.
Garage say they do the job by dropping gearbox for clearance so no body off.
The garage charges are very reasonable but quoting £600 for pipe which I really can't stretch to at the moment.
Will source a pipe and see if I can get somebody to assist with the fitting
Thanks in advance

However it's done, make sure they fit the bracket too, otherwise like mine, it vibrates and splits again in 18 months
