Powering a tablet as a Satnav replacement - HELP!! |
|
Hi gents,
Am about to undertake the process of changing my budget Disco 4 GS screen (no satnav/single colour) for a tablet (most likely a Lenovo 7”) due to its ease of installation and the Nexus 7 seems like it has a lot of obstacles to overcome!
My question is this: How should I power it? I’m aware that it needs to be plugged into either a cigarette lighter style thing, or can be directly attached to the loom? The former option seems fairly simple but I think it needs a fairly hefty amount of ampage to run and not run out of battery (2/3amps)?
I think I’ve found a powerful enough cigarette lighter adaptor, but someone please correct me if I’m wrong: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cliff-Top-Ultra-C...ref=plSrch
Next issue is how to route from the charger from my adapter, to the tablet in the dash - can anyone find a cable that supports fast charging AND is a good 2m long or so...?
Failing that, if there’s anyone near Rutland who’d be willing to help me wire it all up (with as much beer as you like), then that’d be brilliant!!
Thanks in advance,
Rob

you can swop the cigarette lighter for a usb type socket, they have dual ports on them one with a 1amp output for charging phones and the other a 3 amp for tablets, as for cables loads of usb's on ebay well over 2metre you require. The usb sockets are on ebay also.

Yeah I’m just always sceptical that they’re NOT in fact powerful enough for the tablet to be used and charged at the same time and have previously bought chargers/cables that have advertised to be powerful enough, but then turn out not to be.

The Anker USB chargers are pretty good, and have thermal limiting. I’ve replaced all of ours with those after having the plastic casing on a couple of cheaper ones start to melt charging tablets.

If it’s just a satnav you’re after you would be far, far better off looking at the complete tried and tested Garmin set up that’s just been listed in the “for sale” section. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Cheers M3 - that’s a v tempting buy, but I’m after something with a bit more functionality (Spotify, Waze, Netflix) etc!
