Ok … I fully understand that the factory-fit Xenon units are "bi-Xenon" because they have a flap that moves when you select high-beam, thus changing the path the light takes.
Does this simply allow more light to escape the projector lens or does it re-direct it from the "dipped" pattern to just go forward?
What I really am after knowing is …
1. if I fit an upgrade kit to my Halogen units, do my units have the flap (thus restricting light in the "dipped" pattern as required) or will I be risking blinding on-coming traffic by always having the "dipped" output behaving like high-beam ?
2. if I don't have the flap, are my projectors "tuned" to the dimensions of a halogen filament and thus, whilst being brighter, the Xenons are wasting light somewhere and not projecting into correct areas on the road (or in the trees as DSL would have it ) ???.

I think this is correct: There's two types.
Regular Xenon and bi-xenon.
I have the regular fitted as standard. Regulars have a halogen main beam.
Bi-xenon have the shuttered main beam AND do a little dance (motor driven) almost like a focusing sequence on start up.
Some have extra lights in the side walls or can be modded in, that come on when turning.
I'm not an expert with lights as I've always had xenon as standard but from the threads, I think that is the general thinking.
If you want to upgrade, get rid of the halogen and replace for xenon units, the difference is money very well spent.Mods:

Close, all Xenons for the D4 have the shutter as do D3’s , so shutter down is dip, main or high beam adds the second lamp, halogen in all cases D3 and D4 upto 2014 and opens the flap to give more light from the Xenon lamp.
2014 Xenon headlamps on only have the Xenon lamp , no halogen high beam infill lamp
The extra bits are on AFS headlamps , these have corner lamps that light up when cornering at low speed for verges drive ways etc but also have static bending function on the Xenon lamp, i.e. it moves with the steering, this is via another ECU and additional wiring over standard Xenons
So upshot is the newer the headlamp the worse the light output is
