Painting a door - does this appear reasonable???? |
|
Hi
If anyone has seen any of my other recent posts, my delightful local main dealer damaged my door, finally admitted liability and then offered a cheque for an amount that I'm not accepting. However, before I proceed to the small claims court I have a question for anyone who has had a door painted:
Is is usual to paint less than the entire door on a reasonably new car in perfect condition and to make no mention of other panels and blending. I ask as the main dealer suggests it will cost £460 and that only part of the door should be painted with no panel blending.
Do I need to get my own quote as this appears very low to me and why would they paint less than an entire door? It's Corris Grey. I've never had a door painted so have no idea what should be done for a decent job.
I'm off to court as I'm not in a hurry, its cheap and the offer makes no allowance for a hire car beyond what the bodyshop might supply. As they damaged it, I'm not sure why I should drive a Fiesta for a week (all the bodyshop has). Nothing wrong with a Fiesta but if it suited my load carrying needs I'd have one. They won't budge despite someone lower down the pecking order initially offering in writing to take the car away, fix it and leave a D5 in its place. The Dealer Head is the one who didn't like this offer and instead blamed me before agreeing in quite a long letter that yes, they had damaged it but as I was so annoyed with them (he is correct) that he'd now just like to send me a cheque as I'd not trust them with the work (again correct). Of course no cheque received ten days later anyway.
Thanks for any advice.

Why is the dealer not making it good? Even with a higher offer, any botched job by the repair company leaves you trying to sort it out.

The last time I had to get a door sprayed, thankfully it was years ago, the body shop insisted on spraying almost the entire side of the car to get it to match, I remember at the time he said he would only spray just the door if the car was almost brand new otherwise it would never match.

I had 2 doors and a front wing replaced on a car many yrs ago, and they also sprayed the rear wing as well to blend in.......As above, if you have the entire door painted, it likely will stick out like a sore thumb unless they blend it in with the adjacent panels. I'm not sure if painting part of the door i.e. either the upper or lower half (depending upon where the damage is ) whether this might be the better option My opinion, the least amount of the car resprayed the better ......Why, because they will always spray a clear coat over it, which starts to peel off after a couple of years, and will look worse than ever IMHO. Thanks for the replies which back up my own views. I think he’s just relying on me going away but why would I. I can’t see how I can lose and small claims costs £80 plus I have a long letter agreeing that they damaged it. To give balance I won’t let them repair it because between me complaining and his staff member offering the repair and courtesy car the dealer head withdrew the offer before I agreed rhe collection date. He also made it clear that I had damaged the car despite images on his forecourt in an undamaged state on the day of drop off for warranty work. The offer was never actually reinstated but I simply don’t trust them and react badly to being called a liar.

My D3 drivers door was damaged by the garage when it was about 5 months old . Took about 4 attempts and eventually the entire side of car painted to get a seamless blend. Light colours seen worse than more solid ones. Car dispatched to local LR approved painters to carry out the work.

Why spray so much : what does the damage consists of ?
There are specialists for small damages that can treat superficial scratches or dents
without repainting. Ofourse when the paint is cracked or gone, its no longer an option...

As they seem to have put in writing they accept responsibility for causing damage and offered to pay for repair as they no longer wish to deal or do business with you and I am sure you them. Surely you are entitled to take to A N Other LR dealer body shop have full repair carried out to your satisfaction with equivalent courtesy car for duration of works quite possibly dropped off on collection from your home and picked up on return of your repaired car. Give them the quote if refused money claim online is the answer. Commercial SDV6 8 Speed 255

Don’t forget to include the devaluation of a damaged repaired new car, unless a new factory sprayed door is fitted it will never be the same, even then there is the possibility it will not be a perfect match although a good spray shop should be able to make a first class job of it.

Sounds like it's time to either put up or shut up.
From your previous other post it looked like they'd agreed to at least pay for the repair, why have they suddenley changed their minds? Mods:

No they offered a small cheque to cover an estimate they had sourced and nothing else. If you read my other posts you’ll note I did not accept it. I was asking for advice from others (which has kindly been given) so if you have no advice to give why post a reply? Do you work for LR or are you perhaps bored? Comments by people like you do spoil forums.

After reading your previous thread, I think you where very lucky to be offered £470 for a dented door! Particularly after slagging the company off on a social media site, there may be expensive repercussions for this. It can when others can't,

Why post a reply, are you for real?
You detail all your experiences on an open forum and don't expect comments, really?
You can also deny that you asked for comments till the cows come home but if you honestly believe posting on an open discussion forum won't stimulate comments then you really have no idea of the whole ethos of social media.
Further to this, having a pop at anybody who doesn't totally comply with your way of thinking doesn't mean everybody else is wrong and you're always right, ask the main dealer, they clearly think you're talking crap, maybe, just maybe people here will start to think exactly the same when you have a poke at the next forum member who doesn't fully agree with you.
As I said in the initial post, I wish you the best of luck with your quest but somehow think your attitude will trip you up, oh look, it probably already has. Mods:

My car - when it arrived 'brand new' from LR had 'paint sag' on two doors and numerous other issues - including a badly scratched/burred rear door high light - and the dealer made it worse by putting a big dent in the offside passengers door.
It was sent away by LR to some paint LR approved specialist in Devon and came back a week or so later with similar 'paint sag' - but in different places. All spelt out on this forum back then (2016/17).
I just live with it now - despite its paint faults (that anyone other than me would be hard to detect) - and other issues such as no stop start (unless been on a BIG journey), poor heating.... etc, etc.
But I still love it!..... for me I have 'bit the bullet' and so far put up with its 'defects' and foibles - got fed up with complaining and sending it back - life's too short!! - but with warranty direct of course for any major issue..... we all know what I'm talking about!
I am looking forward to the 'All new Defender" coming out - in the hope it will be before MY D4 HSE needs new belts.
Or maybe just a RAV will do the job and give me less angst! 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black
