What I do is drill a small hole to where the plastic is in the tube and then use a needle point podger to slowly lever it up through the hole, it takes time but have done a few this way. Then just stick some silcone over the hole.. a 3mm hole is enough to do it.
Feck taking the sump off

I agree with Flack, I've done it this way too if slightly different. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Galway.
As I said the tube is very difficult to thread thru the engine.
You could pull it out 2 inches and then pull the dip stick out the bottom. I think there is a bolt at top of engine for tube.
If oil is on maximum I expect you will end up with a massive oil puddle.
If oil on minimum you will be fine.
But how do you know!

My initial though was to just pull the tube, but I can’t see the other end of it from above and I can’t get under the car at the moment to have a better look. I’d be very concerned about getting the tube back in and seated correctly when I can’t see it.
When I’m feeling better I’ll have to drive up my ramps to give better access underneath and then I can see what’s what.

I'd go with Disco_Mikey and drop the sump off. 14 x 8mm bolts is a lot easier then you think.
Also, if you need to change the tube, you can push it up through the upper sump assembly. But don't forget to undo the 2off 10mm bolts holding the tube to the EGR valve first.
While you have the pan off, you can drop the strainer pickup out and check for any debris that might restrict the oil. You be amazed how some people plaster silicon on gaskets that gets squeezed out and collects here!Joe

The tube is held in place by a bolt about 3 inches down from the top

Would these do it? They are laparoscopic surgical instruments. The diameter is 5.5mm and the shaft length 40 cm.

Had to replace the tube on my V8 as the weld had broke where it bolted to the side of the engine caused a vacuum leak.
Anyway from the comments above sounds like a very similar set up, it pops of the bottom and the bolt near the top. Its a fiddle to get out and back in again, I tied baler twin to the bottom and secured the other end roughly in the right area when removing it which helped get the new one back in the right place as did having OH to help.==================================

A spot of superglue on a plastic stick may allow it to be pulled out.

It’s gone too deep in now, every time I try get to it, it just pushes in further.
I’ll remove the tube if I can when I’m feeling up to it, just haven’t the strength to be drawling around under cars right now.
Or I’ll just leave it for the garage to fix as it’s going in next week anyway.
