struggling to part with D4 |
|
I get a company car every three years and in august my D4 lease is up.
I went into the local landcover dealer this afternoon to see the D5.
unbelievably I don't think I am going to take the new car and I am going to try to extend the lease on my current disco.
I just couldn't get excited about the D5 at all.
crazy really.

Sounds like a plan
The Full Fat was the closest modern equivalent that I could find, especially for those sitting in the front, but it’s only a 5 seater and not such an ultimate load carrier (I use a trailer for that now).
Do you think you’ll take the extra year, or are you considering something else? 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: FL2 as a second car
2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!

See if your company will pay you the lease premium as a car allowance and then buy the car from the lease company.
You’ll get a 2-owner, 1-driver D4 and make quite a tax saving - tax on the lease premium, but not punitive car tax. If the company will also reimburse your fuel, you’ll only pay tax on the actual spend, not some imputed benefit based on the original list price.
I did this with my Passat and saved a lot of tax. 2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze
2012 - FL2 2009 GS Stornoway Grey
2001 - VW Passat Estate Inky Blue
1999 - Ford Mondeo Light Blue
1998 - Rover 25 Red

It really is a dilemma. Having had a D3 for 14 years I was struggling to find something to replace it with. I looked at the D5 and it just left me cold. Nice to drive but compromised in so many areas over the D3/4. I came close to buying a new FFRR because it was the closest but lousy dealer service killed that. I then thought I'd downsize and came very close to buying a new Cayenne until we needed to use the Old Bus for what it was designed for, and what we had always used it for, which made we realise the Cayenne wouldn't cut it. Nice car though and great dealer service.
So long story short, I bought Navy Docs D4. It'll serve me for the next couple of years until the LEZ hits Bath, by which time hopefully the Rivian will be available in the UK.
By focusing on the crowded soft roader SUV market LR has lost its identity and pushed people away to other brands, which has also not been helped by its woeful dealer network. The ultimate do it all load lugging exec go anywhere family wagon that the Discovery has always been has been lost. Hopefully the new Defender will address that. I hate to say it, but the load area in a D5 is longer than a D4 - I can get my step ladders in my D5 without moving the passenger seat forward - I coundnt in the D4

As long as the higher loading height, lower roof, narrower opening and sloping folded rear seat aren’t a problem when loading a sofa, the platform length should be fine 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

That just about sums it up for me but you forgot the lack of a split tailgate which really helps when loading large things!! .
