Sand and Gravel Programme - it made me smile! |
|
A friend on mine who owns a Freelander suggested that if I ever wanted to be a boy racer at the lights to put the ATR into sand and gravel.
Today at the lights in La Linea (near Gibraltar) a you young lad in a Golf GTI complete with big exhaust was next to me at red light giving it some rev's. So I switched the beast into Sand and Gravel...the lights went Green so I hit it.... the Disco went of like a rocket, a slight 4 wheels spin, it was as if it was on steroids, indeed my poor pet Lurcher in the back nearly flew though the back window (no harm done in case any tree huggers are worried) and left the GTi as a speck in my mirror and a huge grin on my face.
Strangely since then the car seems to be much more responsive so I guess I must have blown some rubbish out of the engine.
The bad news (isn't there always) I think I lost about 1 mm of tyre tread and my fuel economy dropped by about 1 mpg!!

I didn't think it was right to leave it in this mode as it locks the diffs?

Two different modes here, the first is grass, gravel and snow - designed to reduce throttle responce, autos start in the highest gear possible, the box changes to the highest gear possible -all to reduce wheelspin on a low friction surface.
Sand mode gives quicker throttle response and holds geasrs for longer.
I don,t think you would damage anything by staying in a terrain responce mode - we travelled 1000's of kms in Argentina with no problems.

I damaged my pride by coming off the throttle too soon at the top of a few dunes though 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

So to be clear "Sand Mode" does not lock the diffs then?

Quote:TERRAIN RESPONSE OPERATION
The following vehicle subsystem control modules are
used for the Terrain Response system:
• Engine management (engine control module)
• Transmission control (transmission control module
- automatic transmission only)
• Transfer box control (transfer box control module)
• Rear differential control (rear differential control
module - if fitted)
• Air suspension control (air suspension control
module)
• Brake system (ABS/DSC/ETC/HDC functions) (ABS
module)
Each subsystem operates in different ways in relation
to the selected Terrain Response program to achieve
the optimum traction, stability and ease of control for
the terrain encountered.
The system has a safety factor
built in which ensures that any program can be safely
used on any surface, even when an inappropriate
program selection has been made.
Quote:Selection of an inappropriate program for the terrain
conditions will not endanger the driver or cause damage
to the vehicle. Continued use of an inappropriate
program may reduce the life of some components. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

So the first quote says it is safe to continually use an innapropriate setting but the second quote says it can reduce the life of certain components. Hmmmmmmm

It means its 'safe' in that it won't kill you if you inadvertently select the wrong setting ...not 'safe' for the wear of components in the long term continual use
BTW Terrain Response as a system is on all of the time .. the special programs are additional settings within the system. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I think the second part refers to a lack of mechanical sympathy for the car.
